Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
Bare with me a moment. I need some direction, cause I'm starting to get lost.
OK. I own a Les Paul Faded Special...LOVE it. Slim neck, light, looks good(faded yellow).... but the neck pickup (490R?) just doesn't clean up the way I'd like it to...works for 90% of the hard rock I play, but isn't quite 'perfect'... I have some finger picked parts I need to play and can't get the articulation of old PAF's. Bought a Les Paul BFG. ...Love the P-90 in the neck..but the Burstbucker (?) in the bridge isn't quite ripping my head off the way I'd like it to, and the neck makes stuff down on the 15-22 really difficult to work... I do a lot of Brian May licks and he spends a lot of time there I decided I might as well drop the cash and get a 'real' Les Paul . I went to the 'Gibson Showcase' here in Nashville, but I only got More-loster. Too many choices, too much stuff to think about. This is what I would like: -60's neck or modern elliptical neck (no 50's) -Weight relieved (not chambered), though a decent weighted solid is fine (under 9... maybe around 8lbs) -a Neck pickup that is articulate and cleans up decent (p-90,57 classic, old paf) -a Bridge pickup that screams like a Narc being beaten at Sturgis(498,500T) -Something in a light color that's not Laquered Black on the back (I see poorly in the dark and black doesn't help)... I've borrowed my other guitar players black/black custom and it's like driving down a lonely road in the swamp. I like solid Red/Gold/Natural/Honeyburst/Lemondrop/...pretty much everything except dark tobacco, really red bursts and Black..I noticed most of the newer Les Pauls at the store are just Mahogany on the back...that's fine. and...drumroll..... I didn't want to spend more than about 1600. Obviously that means a used guitar. I suppose I could apply for credit and get a new one, but there are so many killer used ones..... I considered a new one like the Traditional Pro (loved the coil splitting) but the colors it's available in all sort of suck. I have played the Les Paul standard faded and that one seemed to be closest, though I'm having reservations about the bridge pickup. The Classics all seemed cool, though there seems to be a lot of tongue wagging at the pickups. I am ALL EARS! little help? Thanks -piggy in Nashville anyways... I thought I'd throw it at you junkies and see what |

Re: Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
Get a Standard Faded with a 60's neck profile.
Then swap out the bridge pickup for a 500T, that is what I did. LOVE IT!

Re: Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
i would rewire and pot cap ur existing one. if it doesnt work try a diff pup. or trad pro rewired pot capped, and a lot of combinations. lets list all the sounds:
1: single coil T 2: single coil R, 3: full HB T, 4: full HB R, 5: single coil T + full HB R, 6: single coil R + full HB T, 7: FULL HB R + T, 8: Single coil R + T. 8 different sounds on 1 guitar solidbody no chambering. nice! pot and cap approprietly, and you will have near unlimeted tonal voicing.

Re: Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
Get a used Les Paul Classic, you should like the stock bridge, replace the neck with a Duncan 59. Or get a Les Paul Deluxe (play it, check the neck, they are variable) modified with a humbucker in the bridge, put one of the pickups you like or a Dirty Fingers or a DiMarzio SD in the bridge, leave the neck p-up stock.

You hate the colors of the Traditional Pro, would consider a faded Standard and you currently play a faded yellow Special. Are you Amish? From your description of requirements, I think Jimmy Page's #1 would be perfect for you.

I Like the OLD t-sunbursts, but it seems the new ones are just stained amber with a Heavy triggered veiling of shadow...nothing like the sof transition 3 color ones I grew up seeing. I mix and shoot colors for a living, and Dark colors tend to need a lot of maintenance...broken up patterns, whites, yellows, gold, tend to hide a lot more. But now that you mention it, I think I would enjoy JP's #1...what's his forum user name? ![]() I'm going down to the gibson showcase again this afternoon... I have sort of narrowed it down to a Standard or a standard faded. Might have to whip out the CC I just paid off. -piggy |

Re: Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
Get a pre-2008 Standard Goldtop with a 60's neck profile. They're weight-relieved but you might want to swap out the BB's if you, as I did, find them too toppy.

Re: Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
Don't worry about the colors too much. You just have to hunt; play every Les Paul you can get your hands on until the one finds you. You will be surprised at how you change your mind about certain preferences when you find the one.

Re: Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
I'd buy used. Seriously.....Nashville's gotta be chocked full of awesome used Gibsons. I'd just wait to see what pops up on Craigslist and go from there.

Re: Which LP should I Buy ???? Need one soon.
Why not save and buy a used R0 (1960 HISTORIC REISSUE)? You already have a few guitars so I wouldn't say you that you needed a LP right away.
