Is there any difference between nickel & chrome hardware?

Chrome has a blueish tint, while nickel is a bit yellowish. Nickel will tarnish with age, while chrome is nearly indestructible and hard as hell. Chrome looks a bit like a cheap whore to me though, way too shiny.

When chrome ages, it just scratches up or pits, it really does not tarnish in the way nickel does. Chrome has nickel plating under it however. A typical chrome plating has first copper, then nickel and finally chrome. Nickel helps give chrome its silver color, as chrome is a bit translucent.

The very purpose for the chrome plating step, is to prevent the nickel layer from tarnishing.

Chrome flakes off, too. Here is the 45 year old tailpiece on my Les Paul - chrome.

like eveyone said. Ive experianced both. the chrome on my 80 still shines like the day i bought er new and the nickle on my 02 is dull and blacky strikey to say the least

if you want durable, go chrome. Think car bumpers. If you want an aged look, go nickel.
