Is there any difference between nickel & chrome hardware?

Any visible difference? Is either one more durable than the other?

Re: Is there any difference between nickel & chrome hardware?

Chrome has a blueish tint, while nickel is a bit yellowish. Nickel will tarnish with age, while chrome is nearly indestructible and hard as hell. Chrome looks a bit like a cheap whore to me though, way too shiny.

Re: Is there any difference between nickel & chrome hardware?

When chrome ages, it just scratches up or pits, it really does not tarnish in the way nickel does. Chrome has nickel plating under it however. A typical chrome plating has first copper, then nickel and finally chrome. Nickel helps give chrome its silver color, as chrome is a bit translucent.

Re: Is there any difference between nickel & chrome hardware?

The very purpose for the chrome plating step, is to prevent the nickel layer from tarnishing.

Chrome flakes off, too. Here is the 45 year old tailpiece on my Les Paul - chrome.

Re: Is there any difference between nickel & chrome hardware?

if you want durable, go chrome. Think car bumpers. If you want an aged look, go nickel.
