Gibson Vs. Jackson

I have a few Epiphones in my collection and was wondering how good would a Jackson Kelly be a good edition? I found one on the Bay for $450. I have also been looking at a Gibson Les Paul Studio. Which would be better. Please remember that I am only 12 and love playing metal music. All advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Ty

Do you play metal? Does the Jackson have a Floyd? There you go.

Ty...

I don't really even consider those the same....they're different animals....other than the fact that both have humbuckers in 'em...that's about it.

You know...last year I drove across the US. I went through Nebraska. I think you outta go to that Guitar Center in Lincoln and try a few out....

Re: Gibson Vs. Jackson

If you want speed, get a jackson. If you want thick sound, get the studio and put emgs in it.

Re: Gibson Vs. Jackson

Man...My boy is 12, so here goes the dad thing!
A Kelly for $450 may be junk?
A floyd trem is the reason for a Jackson.
I think that the Kelly is a crappy version of an Explorer.
Get an Epi Explorer new for $400?
Get a Jackson Dinky DX10 W LFR for $300.
Get a Gibson at all costs!

Good luck...practice...never sell your guitar or your pen!

Re: Gibson Vs. Jackson

If metal is your thing you'll probably need a Floyd Rose so go for the Jackson. I have a Dinky DK2, it doesn't have the character of a Les Paul but it has a Floyd Rose and a lovely slim neck. Very easy to play.

Re: Gibson Vs. Jackson

I love my Jacksons -- Purple D2K Dinky (bolt-on neck) and Black SL2H Soloist (neck-thru) -- as companions to my ebony Custom. Each Jackson has a Floyd Rose, they're built for speed, and they're light weight. The Jacksons simply perform better for certain songs like Cemetary Gates, Eruption, or any song that requires dive bombs.

The purple Jackson Dinky was my first guitar and I got it for $400. I put in an EMG 81/85 set of active pickups and an EMG single coil. They make the guitar sound as good as any $4000 guitar in my opinion. It's been a great workhorse and it's always in tune. I'll never part with it.

I use to feel like that about the speed thing, but once my speed technique "matured" some I was able to achieve about the same speed on either my jackson or LP style guitars. I do like the slim speed neck on the jacksons, and whammies are much more common on jacksons which is great for most metal. I just like the sound of my LP guitar way more than my jackson, so I don't really play my jackson as much as I use to.

Re: Gibson Vs. Jackson

If its a Kelley "Pro" which is made in Japan, that might be decent. But a nice Studio is a great great guitar, and will give you that thick and fat sound that you really can't beat. A Jackson is well suited for fast solos, faster thrashy riffs etc. Depends on your style of playing really.

I got a trans black DK2 with all maple neck and two humbuckers and the neck is pretty much as slick as an Ibanez costing much, much more money.

Std Man....you know...TBH the best thing you could ever do is try all of these guitars out and come to your own conclusions.

It plays as good as my $800 LTD and is very light, or dinky, so my son has a field day with it.
Best Jackson bang for buck.

Then again an Epi LP can be had for $200- $300 used? Not making this easy are we?

Ya I know Sentry. The only problem is my main local dealer doesnt carry Jackson or ESP and they are sold out of Deans. Think Zakk Wylde EMGs would be better in my futura? It currently has Seymore Duncan Blackouts.

a good ESPis going to cost just as much as a Gibson.

Seconded. In all honesty it sounds like you should be shopping for effects and an amp vs. another guitar.

Re: Gibson Vs. Jackson

If you are looking for the ultimate in Rock guitars, go with a Gibson Les Paul. Nothing else comes close, but if you are thinking "Pointy" guitar, consider a vintage Kramer or Charvel. I have 2, and they are both incredible. You can pick one up on the Bay for $4-500. The sound, the feel and the mojo is great!!!

you should have tried to win Dennis' 496R/500T set for your Epi, those would wourk good for metal with a good distortion pedal
