Tracing Serial Numbers

Im new here and wanted to trace the serial numbers on a couple of Les Pauls.

Where do I go to find the numbers?

I have a 1960 Classic LP, I know its serial ends in 028 if I remember right. I also have a early mid 70s LP. I dont have the numbers with me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tonite I'll check them and bring them with me tomorrow.

Thanks.

Re: Tracing Serial Numbers

The 1st and fifth numbers are the year such as 7 and 4 would be 74, second third and forth are the day/month such as 021 would be 21st day of january as 365 would be 31st day of december. The last three numbers signify the factory built in and number of guitars built that day I believe. Heck just go here it explains it quite well!!

Re: Tracing Serial Numbers

early to mid 70s the only way you are going to get an exact year is by pot codes. Hopefully it still has at least one original pot in it.

Re: Tracing Serial Numbers

I still need a little help.

My 1960 Classic is serial number 9 028
From the info here the 9 on this guitar means it was made in 1989. Can someone help me with the rest of the number. 028 What does this mean?

My other LP was sold to me as a 1972 Goldtop the serial is 127946 punched in the wood with Made In The USA punched under it. The guitar dater above said it was made in either 70-71-72 in Kalamazoo

I loaded the Classic's serial number in guitar dater and it came back 60-61-62 in Kalamazoo. I guess they used the original serial numbers on the first guitars in this run. I have tryed to find a mate for my Classic thru the years but Ive never found one that plays and sounds as good as this one to my ears. Does anyone know if there were any big differences in the manufacturing of these guitars.

Im sure other people have asked similiar questions but Im just trying to figure out my guitars.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Tracing Serial Numbers

checking at Gibson, the 100,000 series was used from '70 thru '75.

have a look at the pots, they should have a number like 137yyww where yy is the year and ww is the week.

I'm not up on Classic serial numbers though.

Re: Tracing Serial Numbers

I guess Im way behind and dont know too much about LPs, other than the fact they sound good.

On this site people refer to R0,R3s,R4s,R8s,R9s.....What do these initials mean?

I know someone will flame me for ignorance, but Im trying to get up to speed.

Re: Tracing Serial Numbers

Well, you've come to the right place

Rx means Reissue followed by the last digit of the year.
R9 = 1959 Reissue
R0 = 1960 Reissue
etc
