gibson les paul custom made in the custom shop?

Hi there
Since when were Gibson les paul Customs made in the custom shop?
I want to buy me a second hand black beauty from 2003 But it don't have the customshop stamp on the back .
Should the les Paul custom come with a Certificate ?

Since 2004.

2004 is correct, the one in my pic is an 04, came with headstock logo, certificate and CS case. If the 03 is an R7 it will be CS, but historics have no headstock logo.

I thought they always were, thus the Name "Custom"

back in the day, gison used the word custom to say top ofthe line.
