I did something stupid....

I was at band practice last night and I brought my new Trad with me. So after practice was over, I was wiping off the guitar when I turned it over and saw scratch marks on the back of it. Now it isn't down to the wood but the gloss has palm sized scratches on it. I realized after a few minutes that it was from my belt buckle. It looks like someone scratched it with their fingernails, my shirt was over the buckle which is what I think save it from going to the wood. Can I get these scratches off the back or should I just live and learn.

You can buff them out.

Re: I did something stupid....

That's a proper battle scar (even if it was just practice). Try buffing with a nitro-safe polish like Virtuoso, otherwise let the guitar wear it proudly.

I NEVER wear a belt, but I still have some "worming" on the back.

Doesn't bother me.

The rivets on your jeans can cause worming.

Yeah, your blue jeans have little rivets on them that "worm" their way into the finish.

EDIT: Damn you, bole!

I actually just bought virtuoso cleaner and polish at GC. So the polish may get the scratches out?

Every one I own has belt buckle marks and scratches. It's the life of a guitar in my hands I suppose.

Oh, and I never wear a belt when I play (my pants can fall off for all I care) and I ALWAYS untuck my shirt. At home, lots of times I play in sweatpants (no damaging there).

Re: I did something stupid....

Look, with respect, you are either going to play the guitar at gigs and practice and accept the wear that occurs naturally, or leave the guitar home and only play it when you are wearing pajamas, then put it back in the case. But there is nothing worse than trying to cover up or fix natural wear. Yes, polish it and if that doesn't work, live with it and enjoy it. Way back when, I attempted to touch up wear marks, now I look at them and can't believe I was that ridiculous. Live and learn.

I hear ya, I just thought I would have gone a bit longer before putting some marks on it. I have been real careful with this guitar since I got it, I do play it hard but I didn't want anything to damage it just yet.

And yeah I did learn my lesson with the belt buckle, that will never happen again.

I realize some people want their guitars to look good as long as they can, that's cool. A Gibson Les Paul is a big chunk of change. Some people don't give a rat's ass about marking it up and that's cool too. To each their own.

Re: I did something stupid....

No disrespect intended. Those first marks are always painful. Just resist screwing around with them. Get that guitar to gigs as quick as possible and you will worry about the marks less and less. For me, it was long blond hair and blue eyes after the gigs that made me forget all about marks. But thats just me. Rock on.

Re: I did something stupid....

An encounter with a boom mic stand not only put a ding right on the top of my R7, but it took a chip of paint off too. Yeah, I was pretty bummed, but whattya gonna do. When I brought it in for fret work, I had the guy drop a little lacquer on it so that it wouldn't spread, that's all. It's still there for all to see. Whatever, it happens. Now I don't care about all the scratches on the headstock from changing strings.

Just wait until you break the headstock. That is depressing but puts the other little scratches and dings into perspective.

Re: I did something stupid....

I'll bet Guitarscratchremover can get those scratches out. I have posts all over the forum on this product with details, pictures, YouTube video, links, etc., so just do a Search from the toolbar at the top of this webpage. I've tried just about every product and this is the only one that worked for me. I have an ebony Custom and black really shows scratches and swirls. Guitarscratchremover even fixed pick scratches on my mirror pickguard. Just apply the stuff until the scratches are gone -- usually one or two applications will do the job. I use it in tandem with the Virtuoso products. I first clean the guitar with Virtuoso Cleaner to remove any schmutz, then apply Guitarscratchremover, then restore luster and add schmutz protection with Virtuoso Polish.
