Any info on Gibson selling the Powertune system by itself?

I've been waiting for Gibson to ship the Powertune (Robot Guitar) system but it seems it won't happen anytime soon. Musician's Friend and Guitar Center both had "coming soon" pages but about a week ago they vanished. I would have bought the Powertune system and installed it in my '89 standard myself. Has anybody seen any info about this?

Its not their invention. I forget the company, but yes you can get just the tuning system. It's $600-$800 but all the retail sellers were overseas. That may change. Google powertune, you'll find it.

It doesn't do any damage to the guitar - I bet they would sell more as an add-on.

If you mean why get the system- easy...press the button and whamo!- instant drop D tuning....press the button ... and bam! -open G tuning.

If you mean why install it on my own guitar myself...easy- more guts than brains.

after slapping 1 on a les paul, all you have to do is wait for the next great invention, the guitar that -plays itself

I just don't see the point...learning to tune a guitar is pretty basic...

covered during my first lesson, as I recall...takes only seconds

..but then, I still prefer stick shifts too

It's its ability to instantly retune to alternate tunings besides standard that I'm interested in.

I drive a stick too and I can tune my guitar (but not at the same time).

I guess all these "self" gadgets will be the perfect companion for "self sex?"

Re: Any info on Gibson selling the Powertune system by itself?

I thought it was a bad idea until I messed with it. I'd actually like to put it on an acoustic for doing alt tunings. Its not fast enough to do during a song though despite what people hope. But ya its nice to play slide guitar from just pushing a button, and its very accurate.

Re: Any info on Gibson selling the Powertune system by itself?

So how accurate is it? what about different string gauges, it doesn't affect how the system respond?
If it's going to cost $800 to install it, may as well buy the Robot guitar, that is if the Robot guitar plays any good.
It's going to be released here tomorrow. I'll check it out to see what it's like. that is a cool color

I played the robot for about a half hour. I'd probably use more own ear and tuner for intonation, but as far as switching between typical and open tunings, its pretty dead on.

Cool But yes, that's my point: with the constant change in tuning, loosening and tightening the string tension, doesn't it screw up the intonation ?

No but you'd only have true intonation with one intonation anyway, even if you tuned with your fingers and ear. With slide side guitar its not as important because you generally don't finger chords and won't notice the intonation being off pitch as you go up the neck.

I don't think this is something for purists who play Celtic/Irish open tunings for example - but they don't use Les Pauls....
