ive bee playing for 2-3 years, my set right now ***** (ephiphone sg 400 and a roland cube 15 for my amp). In 13 weeks ill have enough money (about 2100-2500) for my new guitar +set. Ive tried out both guitars and love 'em both (i play mostly rock, metal, punk, and hardcore. My favourite stuff to play are alexisonfire, slayer, some green day or some punk type band, metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers). Which one should i choose? (all around, sound feel and playing). Also im thinking of running them through a line 6 spider 3 120 modelling amp (going to get something small now and get a nice stack later on in university) should i go for this? or some other thing (and still staying in budget sg=1399, les paul 1050)so tell what u think and get 2 me thanks

Re: Need Your Opinion. Gibson Sg Standard or Gibson Les Paul Studio? + amps
Looking at your selection of bands you prefer to play, it's a toss up bro!
LP I think would work better for you opposed to an SG, but -------- you might want to go try out an Explorer. just a thought I guess whatever feels better, there both great guitars. |

Id just play both. I don't know that the stock Les Paul pickups would sound good to you given your musical taste, and IMHO the SG would be better. But you can put whatever pups in you want. You won't go wrong with either.

Re: Need Your Opinion. Gibson Sg Standard or Gibson Les Paul Studio? + amps
Go play both of em and see what you think. One may just feel better to you that the other. If the guitar feels right go for it - pickups can always be changed.
Amps - cant say I have ever been fond of the Line 6 Spider amps. If I were you I would also take a look at VOX AD and Roland Cube amps - if you want to stay with a modelling amp. I have a Vox AD 30 for home use which I am very happy with. I thought it sounded much better than the Line 6 (Spider 2 series though) and the Roland Cube. |

ever think of buying used. you can get a real nice std these days for $1300 or so. and thatll leave you plenty of $$$ leftover for a nice amp.

Re: Need Your Opinion. Gibson Sg Standard or Gibson Les Paul Studio? + amps
I've played both a Les Paul Standard and a still own a Les Paul Studio. In the past I've owned a very nice 1972 SG with the Bigsby and currently own a 2005 SG Standard. I've pretty much have always played them through Marshall amps, and in my case I like the SG standard. The sound is great and after an hour your shoulder still feels alive. Of course the Les Paul Studio is lighter, and has that great Les Paul look, but if I where buying one I would play several of each since they're all a little different. I played three SG's and at least two LP Studios before I decided on which one I liked the best. The wood grain on the SG was the man factory, and this particular guitar did not need a set up coming right out of the box playing beautifully. The ran into the same issues on the LP Studio, and fortunately I found it in the first shop I stopped by. But I did try at least two before I was happy. I have the trans wine gold finish and it's simply a beautiful guitar.
Everyone has their own opinions and needs in their instruments, so make sure your getting what's right for you. |
