Re: Favorite Les Paul Model ??

In terms of appearance, I like the Black Beauties by far; but I haven't had enough experience playing LH Les Pauls to really tell which are the most comfortable to play... My favorite so far was a Tobacco Burst (I think) Les Paul Custom, but it was a bit out of my price range (as in, I could have a '54 Custom BB shipped from the U.S. for that price)

Re: Favorite Les Paul Model ??

Black Beauty , Fretless Wonder, Gibson Les Paul Custom with PAFs.

That to me is THE Les Paul. All others need not apply.........Ok, until I just got this R9 Standard, and am totally in love

I don't know how it happened , I came off my high horse and bought a model that was NOT a CUSTOM .
OK, I'll admit I had a mid nineties Classic, but it was all gold, I mean ALL gold, but I sold it because it WAS NOT A CUSTOM! I am/was a Custom Snob.

Well, just about now, I'm not sure what I am. Must feel like this when one comes out of the closet or has a strange encounter with another human that leaves them confused?
Me with a mere "Standard" What will the neighbors say?
Anyway, I really love the looks of the BB Customs and like the feel of Ebony beneath my mitts. But I'll say I've not gotten quite the warmth out of any Custom that I'm now getting from the R9.

But to me, she will always be THE Gibson: A Black Beauty , Fretless Wonder Gibson Les Paul Custom with PAFs.

Re: Favorite Les Paul Model ??

has always been the Standard, ever since I bought my first Guitar Player magazine with Joe Walsh on the cover. He corrupted my little mind, and I've wanted a '59 Standard ever snice. June 1975, I believe. I still have it somewhere in my music memorabilia. 32 years of lusting and counting.

Re: Favorite Les Paul Model ??

Customs. Ebony under my fingers just agrees with me... Also I feel the Customs have the best looks among all Les Paul models. Its simple, yet elegant, and if you put a few dings in her, she'll keep on putting out for ya like a high class whore.

Customs look great when they are brand new, but beat to shit, road worn, played until the wood is showing Les Paul Customs still retain their elegance, sophistication and of course tone... and even manage to gain character.

Its a thick, no nonsense tone that can handle whatever you throw at it. Metal guys play Customs, rock, rockabilly, country, jazz, blues, you name it, and it always seems to work.

For me, the Standard is a rock guitar. I love Standards, almost as much... but the Custom is the Flagship of the Les Paul line of guitars, in my opinion, even without the crazy flame or quilt tops, or imaginative paint colors or bursts. Black, White, Wine Red or Natural are the staple of Les Paul Customs, and they don't need any more than that.

Standards (particularly darkbursts and tobacco), but Customs (in black) are a close second.

That being said, I am quite happy with my wine red Standard

No, unfortunately I found it after the auction.
Oh well. ....Got an R4 BB Custom and an R9 Standard as a consolation.
Sort of a combo to get the best of bothworlds, P90's and PAFs.

I really miss my '68 BB. Someday we'll reunite

My favorite model is the one I have in my hands

Actually, it depends what the application is. I like the 58 - '59 models the best. The historics (although I never played a real one) feel the best in your hands. I can't really explain it, you need to have them side by side to know what I am talking about.

I do have a 97 lester that sounds solid though and it holds its own against the custom shops BUT it weighs as much as an elephant

I'll post some centerfold pics, later!

For me I love the custom black beauty when the gold has faded off of the hardware, or with nickle hardware. But the Standard is also a gorgeous guitar. In fact I've seen some fantastic looking Studio's for that matter! But the custom is now and will always be the dream guitar for me
