Studio 2013 vs 2014?

Just wondering if there are any great differences between the studios from 13 and 14?
I have been looking at these quite a lot recently.

I really fancy a trad or a sig but it's a lot of money. Still a possibility though.
For a couple hundred quid more I could get a studio and an lpj which has crossed my mind lol.

I don't really have the chance to test them both side by side. The closest gibson dealer has neither at min, closest is a studio pro.

With the 2013 models being discontinued is it worth grabbing one before they go or just go for the 14?

Any major differences?
If I get a 13 it might be the gold top, £100 more but I really want a gold top.
If I get a 14 I fancy the desert burst, second choice is honey burst. Never seen any in person though, just going off stock pics

Re: Studio 2013 vs 2014?

I grabbed the 2013 Studio in dec last year.
I prefer the 2013 Studio. Colour wise as well as pickups they come with.

U should compare the 2013 Studio with 2014 Studio Pro.

The normal 2014 Studio with the different finish, gig bag and pickups just cant compare with the 2013 Studio IMO.
The LPJ is rather close to the 2014 Studio.

Major difference to take note will be the pickups I believe.

Its all up to preference.
Its best to be able to try them.

I think the 2014 has a maple neck and the funky 12th fret logo.

Re: Studio 2013 vs 2014?

If the info online is correct they both have 490 in the neck. 14 has 490 in bridge, 13 has 498.
14s are tapped too which makes little difference to me. And 14 has a maple neck, I don't know what the difference would be between maple and mahogany in terms of quality and sound. All my les Paul's have mahogany necks I think.

Apart from that they look on par.

Really tough choice, I'm going to have to finance but I do intend to pay back early.
I pay just over 40 for my tribute a month which I'd about half way paid.

Over 2 years i could get the studio for just under 30 and lpj for about 15. One or the other of both.
Or I could get a sig t of a trad for about 50 a month.

If I got one of the cheaper models I'd be a bit better off a month, if I got both I'd be no worse off than I am now. And the more expensive model would be a few quid more which I'm not bothered about.

I'm really digging the studio. Mid priced, appears good, a lot of love on here for them.

Yup... 13' have mahogany necks. 14' have maple, but the Studio Pro might have a mahogany neck as MF, AMS, Sweatwater, and Music Zoo list them as mahogany necks. Gibson at first listed them with mahogany necks. Now they are listed with maple necks on their website.

Easy one! 2013 Studio/Studio pro if you prefer something fancier! I'm not a big fan of maple necks on Les Pauls - a feature that both the '14 Studio and Studio Pro share..

Give 'em both a try and tell us how they feel!

Re: Studio 2013 vs 2014?

So it seems like the 13 is better then.

I hope I can at least try the pro out if I can't get my hands on the regular studio.

Really digging the gold top but do you think £100 more is worth a colour? When buying online there's no way to haggle either which sucks

Actually the pro specs seem pretty sweet.
If it is good I could always just get that. Not a fan of any of the finishes though

Edit: just noticed the shop I was going to try have he studio deluxe 2 not the pro. Oops

2013 Studio Deluxe II is a gloss Studio with a AA flame maple top, burstbucker pro in the bridge, grover tuners, rosewood fretboard, traditional weight relief, and a battery powered boost built in. It has all the other features of the regular 2013 studio like the coil tap except it has Push/Push knobs instead of the normal Push/Pull. Personally, I like Push/Push better. It comes in either a 50's or 60's neck version and has different color choices than the standard 2013 Studio. For instance, mine is Honeyburst which wasn't available on the normal 2013 studio.

I checked out the 2014 Studio Pro a little on some of the sites. I think the maple neck on the pro is a typo. Even the Gibson site says both. If you look at the splash page, it says maple. When you click on the specifications, it says mahogany. I think someone in marketing messed up. It's hard to tell either way in the pics available. I'm used to seeing maple being lighter in color than mahogany. On the few transparent finish ones I've seen they're darker. So, they either have mahogany, or the darkened the finish on the maple more than normal.

As for haggling online... either call or chat online and you can haggle. The Deluxe II is a Guitar Center Exclusive, so I'm guessing you're looking there or at Musiciansfriend online. If so, they will both haggle over the phone or in chat. In fact, Musiciansfriend sometimes has sales where you have to call in to get the sale price.

Edit: spelling

Re: Studio 2013 vs 2014?

Thanks, I have been emailing the shop so may be able to haggle a bit.

I'm from uk and the deluxe 2 is for sale over here.
Unless too many were produced like with the trad pro 2.

Can't wait to finally play some gibsons.
If I could get the 13 goldtop for same as regular studio I'd prob jump on it in a heart beat

I will pick the Studio Deluxe II above the 2014 Studio Pro and 2013 Studio.

Re: Studio 2013 vs 2014?

I've just bought a 2013 Studio after researching this and last years models. The huge price discount swung it for me on the '13, and from what I can see the only differences between the '13 studio, and the '14 Studio Pro which is more similar to last years Studio, is the latter has a prettier top, upgraded bridge pup, and higher spec tuners. The boost didn't appeal to me tbh. I did think about Rosewood vs Grandillo, but as a long time Gray Moore fan (Grandillo on the GM Sig' LP), and the fact that Grandillo is supposed to be a harder wearing version of Rosewood, fretboard wood didn't bother me either. If you can get a good discount on the 2013 go for it!

The price for 13 studios seems to be £799 but £899 for the gold top.
Quite a lot of money.
The 14s are only £779. All websites say huge discounts on 2013 models yet are more expensive than the new models

The 799 Studios are satin finish. They are no better than a LPJ or 50s/60s/70s Tribute. You can only compare the 799 and 899 Studios with the current year Studio Pro, which is 999.

As you know I got mine for £569. I'd say if you walked into any Music store with hard cash, they'd be prepared to drop well under the £799 if you bartered with them.

Right...

2013 Studio = 2014 Studio Pro

2014 Studio is more like a 2013 Tribute

It's trying to find them.
There is a huge shortage of music shops in the north east. Only 1 that stocks gibsons as far as I'm aware.

Hopefully will come across a 2013 studio when I go shopping.

Do you mean Newcastle Upon Tyne way? GuitarGuitar have a huge stock of 2013 LP Studios judging by their website. If you're up that way, I'd call in and ask what's the best they'd take for one. Good luck in your quest to find one that's right for you.

Kinda... They just changed the names and specs around a little bit. It looks like they've eliminated the Tributes so far, reduced them down to one model, and renamed it plain old "Studio". What was called "Studio" is now the "Studio Pro".

Going from Gibson's page, it looks like the major differences between the 2014 models are:

Studio = Satin Finish
Studio Pro = Gloss Finish

Studio = 60's Maple Neck
Studio Pro = 60's Mahogany Neck (probably) - Also has compound radius!

Studio = Vintage Tuners
Studio Pro = Grover Tuners

Studio = 490R / 480T Pickups
Studio Pro = 57 Classic / Burstbucker Pro

Studio = Gig Bag
Studio Pro = Hard Shell Case

Beyond that, it looks like it's mostly aesthetics... finish colors and plastic colors.

The main reason for the difference in price is going to be the gloss finish, the hard shell case, and possibly the compound radius on the Studio Pro. The HSC retails for about $200 in the US. The satin finish won't take nearly as much time or work to paint and polish as the gloss. It also won't hold up as well.

Yeah but at the opposite end of North East.
I check their site all the time. Seems like a lot of their old stock is slowly going. I just hope not before I get a chance to go up.
I can see myself buying either something like a sig t or a studio then prob an lpj.
Mrs will kill me but be alright.
If I go anything above the studio I'm definitely selling my custom.
Got a new tone knob on its way because one cracked.
Then going to try sell it.
Got an ipad to sell too to help fund my Gibson GAS lol
It's basically once I sell them 2 I'm going shopping.

I've only ever had gloss neck so don't know what satin will be like.
The case is a big plus. Sure some places give cases.
One place I've looked are giving cases on the 2013 studio.
And guitar guitar are giving them with the lpj.

Yeah... the 2013 Studio as well as the 2013 Studio Deluxe II we were discussing earlier both normally come with cases.
