2014 Gibson studio pro ?

Hello,
Im a beginner guitar player and would like to buy an LP, Ive had two 2013 future tribute les pauls for a short time and returned them because of finish flaws i couldnt stand. Now Id like to order the 2014 Les Paul studio PRO in cherry sunburst candy finish, is that a wise choice would you recommed something else?

What im looking for:

guitar that lasts
split coil pickups
quality finish
good playability

What im not looking for:

cheap satin finish(like the 2013 tribute series, LPJ)
probably not a really heavy guitar that will break my back

Thank you very much guys!

Tom.

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

From what I see, it should fit your wants and don't wants.

They are modern weight relieved and the example I looked at was 8lbs 6oz.

I've always liked studios just as much as standards (have both).
I REALLY like the 2014 teal blue candy studio pro model and would love to have one if my herd wasn't so large already!

Good luck!

I have just started looking at the 14 studios.
Had my heart set on the chocolate lpj 13 but this GG Image looks nice

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

Doodles I recommend you to look at the LPJ in person first as I did, the finish there seems like a really low end finish that wont last long

Laterider, I know but I was just curious If somebody wont recommend something else or have good/bad experience with the higher end studios...
the blue candy is really nice!

Butcher FWIW I only have good things to say about the higher end ones, I have a 2009 White Gloss Studio and a 2013 Honeyburst Studio deluxe. These things get just as much play as my standards, maybe more since I am more inclined to take them out.
There are some here that dig on the higher end studios, saying why not just spend some more and get an even higher end model. I think the studios rate right up there, no question about it. Also for me, I don't have the biggest hands and even though the studio bodies are just 1/4" thinner, it makes a big difference to me for comfort when playing above the 12th fret.

Yeah I've just seen recently about the finish wearing fast.
I'd love a nitro finish so it does wear a bit more, but it does seem faster than other finishes.
I do like the choc colour and seen some nice pics of peoples lpj on here.

When the time comes I will try check them out.
Closest store is only about 40 min away in Newcastle. But I rarely venture into cities unless it's for a gig. I have never actually shopped in Newcastle despite living 40 min away my whole life lol.

But if I'm gonna put 500-800 down for a guitar I would like to see it.
Only reason I bought my epi tribute blind was because I'd heard nothing but good things about them.

I can't really afford more than epis, the lpj be fine, studio be a push but I'd rather pay more and do it right.

I just hope it doesn't get to the last lpj and I panic buy and finance because financed goods can't be returned unless faulty

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

Laterider, exactly what I wanted to hear, also what do you think of the modern weight relief? is it better/worse than the others?

Doodles If i were to play the guitar frequently, taking it on gigs Id probably not get the LPJ as I dont like the paint to get off the guitar so quickly, but if you dont mind , and you dont need the coil split Id go for it. It plays really good (talking abou the 2013 assuming the 2014 has the same finish) The middle way is the regular studio with better quality finish (but not the glossy one) but without the coil split option

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

Yeah the 2014 I'm looking at is regular studio, gloss finish, has coil tap. I never use it though.

I will hopefully be gigging it on a regular basis. New band at gigging point so fingers crossed

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

Studios are great axes and you won't hear many bad things about 'em. If you have shops nearby, go look at the ones you're considering. They are handmade guitars and there are differences in each guitar. I recently purchased a Vintage Burst Studio Deluxe II with a 50's neck that has an awesome flamed top and fantastic finish from my local GC. There were 2 other Deluxe II's in stock but didn't have the look or feel like the one I bought. The first had a scratch in the top that probably got there from someone who was playing in the store. Its top had some flame but only about 1/2 what mine has. The other was an Ice Tea Burst with a 60's neck. It was nice too, but the neck was a little too thin for my taste and it had a couple minor finish flaws that I didn't like.

There will be small differences in each guitar to look at. If possible get several in your hands and choose the one the "speaks" you the most. Hard to do that if you just order something online. If you must order online, than do so from a retailer that has pics of the actual guitar you're ordering & not something that just shows "stock" pics of the model you're look at.

Good luck and take your time. You'll find the one for you with a little research and patience.

Butcher I don't have experience with the modern weight relief. I have chambered on the 2009 and traditional relief on the 2013. I also do have one Trad LP with no relief. I do like weight relief, the 2009 is a joy as its light but maybe giving up some bottom end to be such. I would really like to try the modern out. I'm thinking tone wise its going to be like the traditional weight relief. I don't think it could fall into the 'worse' category, looking at what Gibson was trying to achieve I would have to say its better, but I can't back that up with experience. I can now say however, that I am really wanting that blue teal one I looked at for some information. The 'example' was 8lb6oz and I now want to buy it and experience it!!! Cheers!!!

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

The 2014 LPJ's and Studio have maples neck. The Studio Pro has the mahogany neck.

***Gibson change the Pro specs. When they first hit the Pro had an mahogany neck.. Just check and it states a maple neck. The LPJ and Studio doesn't state the neck material just the finger board.

***Sweetwater has the Pro specs neck to mahogany.

***My original post about maple necks on studios What!!! all 2014 Studios have

Now if that's the case the LPJ is the way to go. Why pay 1400.00 for the same guitar a an LPJ. Even if you don't like the pickups you can get a set and still cost you less than the Pro. You could finish it yourself and still be less than the PRO.

BTW I think this color kicks ass.

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

Here is a picture of my first Gibson Les Paul. I paid 490.00 from MF in 2009...

Then I finished it myself. Finish supplies which included Paint, Clear Coat, Grain Filler, and a few other items cost me around 100.00.... Then my pickups I purchased used were a Pearly Gate set that I got for under 130.00 (Now has 57's in it and reflector knobs).
These are the after pictures.

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

The Studio Pro is a great option--will certainly meet your criteria. However, at that price point, you should be aware that many gibson dealers are blowing out 2013 models at significant discounts, so you could potentially upgrade for not much more (or perhaps even the same) as you would pay for the Studio Pro. Check all the major sites--Guitar Center, Sam Ash, zZounds, Sweetwater, Musicians's Friend, etc., and also check out eBay. You could even score a Trad or something in that class for the same money. Just my two pennies.

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

Doodle, interesting, its the only site to state this.

Ive considered all the options thanks to you and ive came up with this:
Ill search for the perfect top Studio Pro and will rather pay more and get a beautiful top than pay less and receive an ugly one and PROBABLY if they discontinue the 12th fret design even without it (i know its really unpopular but cmon it makes the guitar unique-thats why i like it) , too bad that theres no store here in europe to offer photos of the actual guitar.
The Blue one you posted is really beautiful, I love that finishbut a bit dark for me, i fell in love with the heritage candy one

I haven't looked around many other sites so don't know if it's a mistake.
Doesn't make too much difference as I don't use coil tap.

I saw a YouTube demo of a studio. Can't remember the year. Was possibly 14 and that had coil tap though.

That is a nice studio Butcher, Like the colour.

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

The LPJ and Studio Pro have the same material. Here in the states a new LPJ is 699.99 (LPJ Pro 799.99) and a Studio Pro is 1399.99 (BTW is which around what I paid for my 13' Traditional). If you are willing to pay 600.00 for a flame top and different pickups. Actually more like 450.00 more because you get a HSC with the Studio Pro. I personally think that's crazy. I think Studio Pro's should be around 1k, but hey it's not my company.

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

There are enough LP models this year to make my head spin..

Not sure why everyone is raging on the satin finishes.. The 'Faded Standards' and the Tribute model's finish don't exactly fall off.. I've had one for the last two years playing regularly and it's just wearing where my arm rests - and that wear is just the finish glossing up...

Re: 2014 Gibson studio pro ?

There is the LPJ, LPJ Pro, LPM which are all Studios, but Gibson wants you to think they are not. Then you have Studio and Studio Pro. Not sure where the Futura falls? Could be a cleaned up BFG or a 50/60 Humbucker Tribute half and a P90 50/60 Tribute half .

Make no mistake. "Vintage Gloss" is just another word for satin.

Of the 2014 models, only the Studio Pro model has a real gloss finish.
