You guys and your pencil lead....

Try this:

It's available at Harbor Freight and other stores, and is a real lubricant. You wouldn't put pencil lead in your car's engine, would you? You can even use a very small drop of clean motor oil.

Re: How to lube a nut using #2 lead.

I wouldn't use motor oil or any other "fluid" lubricant on my guitar.

I've been using pencil lead or powdered graphite for almost 30 years, and it works great. Graphite is an excellent lubricant, often used in areas where a fluid or semi-fluid wouldn't be acceptable. You might not want to use it in your car engine, but it'll be used in other places in your car, like the alternator spindle and maybe the A/C comressor.

I tried that "Nut Sauce" stuff, and it works OK, but not as well as graphite, and it's way more expensive. It sort of reminds me of really thick petroleum jelly (Vaseline), so the idea of mixing Vaseline with graphite.

Been doing that for many, many years, works great, I Clean the nut surface after the application though.

The nut slots on my guitars usually aren't a gasket-sealed system running at hundreds of degrees and thousands of psi, so I treat them differently than my engines.
