Stop Bar Tail Piece :: Through vs Around

Through

Around

Any difference?
Are there Les Pauls that are supposed to be done like this (when they have the Tune-O-Matic bridge)?
Does it require a special Stop Bar?

Re: Stop Bar Tail Piece :: Through vs Around

Lots of opinions regarding "top wrapping", and many famous players string em up this way. It is said to improve bending ability, and reducing the chance of bending or collapsing the bridge, because of the drastic angle when the strings are brought through the usual way. Some say there is a tonal improvement also but I'm not sure about that.

I have a "Tone Tail" stopbar on my Epi LP...it has grooves in it to accomodate the top wrap, which reduces stress on the ball end of the string....but certainly you can top wrap a standard stopbar. They are available online if you want to take a look

You don't need a special tailpiece to top-wrap...

There is no difference. Why would a Tonepros be any different than the Gibson one? It's not gonna hurt either one of them.

PRS has the best solution for their guitars when it comes to top wrap, its pretty awesome as per SC250, has the saddles built in

Re: Stop Bar Tail Piece :: Through vs Around

I'm always bewildered by this. When I got my first Les Paul at 16, I think I saw a pic of one of Zakk Wylde's Pauls. I thought, Hmmm. That looks interesting. I think I'll try it! There was no forum about Les Pauls. You just did it!

Looks at all the different pics of top-wrapped Pauls. I've never seen a single one with a special tailpiece on it. There's no need for slots, unless maybe it's a combo bridge/tailpiece. This stuff is so silly.

I just top wrapped my Classic with the stock tailpiece. Feels pretty solid. As Bole stated, I don't see the need for anything special to do this.

I was 32 in '92. I'm 48 now (49 in a couple of weeks). Dusty balls, nothin'. Mine aren't just dusty on the outside...

Never tried top-wrap, though I've known guys who swear by it. Another item for the bucket list...

Re: Stop Bar Tail Piece :: Through vs Around

So I have a question. Did those of you who wrap do so to be able to lower your stop bar to the body? My stopbar is raised a bit and my high 2 just touches the bridge (I can not lower it any more without putting stress on the string). The guitar seems fine but I am always 'dicking around with these things. I am just wondering what the reasons and results were from wrapping the stopbar?

Damn, that is funny. But you made me feel OLD! The first LP I remember "noticing" that was top wrapped was Billy Gibbons' back in 1978 ( I was a 13 year old punk playing and Arbor LP Copy )!!!
