Probably just a prototype issue.

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
Would be kinda cool to have. You would have to bring a backup with all that stuff.
Piezo, coil split, robot tune for some slide, chameleon tone, whatever the heck that is. Don't like the tailpiece or the BB3 in the bridge, but I wouldn't mind messing around with one of these. |

It looks like a Studio version of the 2010 Standard Limited Edition robot. I wonder how much it will retail for.

I really like it but i hate the lighter look on the granadillo fretboard.Would look more cool if they put rosewood instead granadillo.

I like it on the condition that the price isn't completely insane. Love that color!

Yeah at that price, I'd definitely pass.

Love the addition of the factory piezo in a Studio, but hate the robot tuners.

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
The inlays on Gibsons made in the last few years seem to have gotten pretty cruddy. The ones on my Studio Tribute are have an ugly coffee hue to them, made all the worse by the fact that it's a white guitar.
Neither that guitar nor my 2007 Standard have inlays that look as nice as my 1993 Studio Lite. Of course, the inlays on the Studio Lite were not applied nearly as well (tons of black filler around them).

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
That's pretty interesting. I like everything but the color... just can't get into the fireburst. The P-90/HB setup is awesome, but I'd almost rather do a P-90 in the bridge and an HB in the neck. I would like a robot... my friend may trade his SG robot with the killer graphite pickguard in (one of the tuners stopped working, but it's under warranty), but I'm going to try to get home to sell it to me instead.

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
I like the high gloss nitro, but I was never crazy about the black/orange fire burst/desert burst... Don't really have an opinion on the robot, but the P90 in the neck is interesting.
Give me a Tea Burst and I'd buy it

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
I wouldn't count on the warranty. The robot parts are only warrantied for 1 year even if the guitar has lifetime warranty (which won't transfer to you anyway). Be prepared to buy a replacement tuner on your own and fix it yourself (Gibson sells it on their online store), and factor that into the price you will be paying for the SG.

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
If anyone is still interested in these, they were $1999 when they came out in August 2012 and now MF has them discounted down to $1149. That's cheaper than a regular run-of-the-mill Studio:

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
I decided to grab one of these ... Had AMS price match to MF. I am still awaiting the RIP from Gibson (almost a month now... But I will cut them a little slack, since I got the guitar just before the holidays). But it has a very slim 60's neck, much like my 89 custom, which is my fav. I am really liking playing it.
Burstbucker is brighter than the 49x combos in several other of my LPs. The brightness is a welcome change to me. The P90 isn't as dark as my 60's Tribute, but I do like that. The piezo doesn't quite get to the "acoustic" sound of the Fishman I added to another studio, and the blend knob is more a pain than a simple on/off switch matched with a blend. Hard to twist the little nub with a pick also in your hand mid song. It is a nice feature, but could have a better sound and implementation. The chameleon tone feature is noticeable, but obviously less so at high gain. But even with the electronics turned off, this is a great sounding LP with great tone. I can foresee using the chameleon tone stuff both live and in a studio. Would be nice if I could get the RIP and play with it some. It does make it easy to go from really raunchy LP tone to something much brighter in an instant. Robot tuners... I no longer will need 3 guitars at a show just for different tunings... But since we use 1/2 step down, again, I need the RIP to reprogram the open turnings down to use them with the band. But switching between std and drop d is quick. I actually noticed I was out of tune in the middle of a song, and it was painless to have it retune in seconds. I am sold on this feature from a performance perspective. Battery doesn't last as long as it is advertised. I got about 3 x 3 hour band practices and about 10 hours of self practices (mostly without electronics on) and the battery was out. Didnt come close to the number of times it is supposed to be able to retune. But spares are really cheap, so I grabbed some extras to have charged and ready. I give this guitar a 9 out of 10. Subtraction for the piezo implementation and Gibson being slow in delivering the RIP. Other than that, I love it as a studio alone, and the robot stuff is bonus... The price I got it for was totally worth it! Paid less for it than several other of my LPs, and this one rocks just as hard with bonus features. DJ |

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
Thanks for the review. Why is the RIP coming from Gibson and not the AMS that you bought from? And couldn't you switch to Eb tuning by just using the MCK knob?
Interesting about the battery life. I have the 1st gen Robot and its unremovable battery hardly needs any charging, because whenever I plug it into an amp, the current from the amp actually keeps the battery charged up. But of course all it could do is self-tune, and none of the new chameleon piezo stuff that you have, which is probably what's draining your battery. |

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
The guitar came in the case with nothing but the guitar and the inspection sheet. Everything else was missing. AMS contacted gibson for me for the replacements.
The battery life could have a lot to do with the fun factor and constantly changing sounds to see which works best in each song. Keep in mind I didn't have a charger and was using the factory charged battery, but the replacement (with charger) I purchased since I was waiting for the Gibson shipment did not last much longer. As far as tuning half step down, the Eb setting works for std tuned songs, and I can fret the second fret of the low E and tune to get drop d. But to get open D and open G tuned 1/2 down I need the RIP to reset those. DJ |

Re: The latest from Gibson USA: 2012 Studio Limited
The guitar should have come with 2 batteries and a charger, as well as the RIP.
I see, you're trying to do open D with 1/2 step down. In my Gen 1 robot, there is a way to program custom tuning just by using the MCK knob. I'm not sure if you can do that with your Gen 2 MCK without using the RIP. Also, in my Gen 1, as long as I am plugged into the amp, the tuning will work - the amp provides enough power to charge the battery and also power the tuners, even if the battery is flat dead. This is probably the only nice thing about the Gen 1 robot, because everything else about it is not that impressive. |
