I don't get it....

This was listed for $4995.00
It didn't sell, and hasn't and won't for that price.
It was just re-listed for more.

Re: I don't get it....

Just out of curiosity, the listing mentions Gibson Tuners with retractable winders. Didn't look that way to me. Are they that well hidden (with screws in the sides of the buttons?) Or is this referring to something different. I'm imagining the type where the winder part swings out..... Only seen them once though so please educate me

Sometimes sentimental value is worth more than cash... That's most likely the case here...
Unfortunately his sentimentality means nothing to the buyer.

(To me, my first guitar is priceless; even though it's worth about $30 in firewood )

The burst on the front looks wrong to me... way too much black and not enough silver. Doesn't quite look like the teardrop it is supposed to.

Re: I don't get it....

I didn't used to get it either until one day one of my buddies was forced to sell some of his guitars on Ebay by a bitchy wifey who knew nothing about guitars.

His strategy - He listed them at ridiculous prices that no one would ever buy. At the same time it got his wife off his back long enough for the auctions to die off and her attention focused on the next thing she wanted to bitch about. He kept the guitars and the peace.

Defintely not worth it when you can easily get a new Black Beauty 57' reissue for $1000 less (if not more).

+1 on this thought.

another thought is he's fishing for that one guy that used to have one, that regrets it so much he's willing to pay anything to have another one from the same year and the same finish etc etc etc...

This is exactly what I was thinking as I read the OP. Seller to wife: " What more do you want from me? I've put it up for auction twice and it didn't sell. Heck, I even relisted it with a different price."

Re: I don't get it....

The picture doesn't do it justice but it's definitely a Silverburst. The 80' Les Paul Custom didn't have any special features that would make it stand out unlike the 80' Artisan. I wouldn't pay more than $1500 though.

Re: I don't get it....

Hey, if he listed it on one of Ebay's "Free Listing" days it wouldn't even cost him to list it, sell or not, so good way to placate the wife. Then again the price has to cover his free shipping, so that probably accounts for a grand or two.

It's the kind of paint they used (maybe still do?) the way it ages is horrible. That's one reason I didn't get a Silverburst Studio when they first came out with ebony boards. I didn't want to have a baby sh*t green burst in 25 years.
It all looks legit, but I'll be Van Damaged if he ever sells it.

When did they start doing silver burst? How did you know in the 80's that they would turn green? Just curious, as I wouldn't have known until years later when it happened.

I was referring to the new silverburst studios they released in 08 or 09. By seeing pictures of 80's silverbursts I feared it would turn green. Not saying I was there in 1980 when they first came out.

Looks like just about every other late '70s-early '80s "burst", to me?

You have to consider, that most of the people making LPs in those days were complete newbs. Just think of them as "practicebursts".
