Soon to be new Gibson owner

Hello all, I have 2 Epi LP's which I love but the time has come to get my first Gibson. I really like the wine red color, a lot!! The 2012 LP standard has the cool push/pull pots and phase shifting and all that but I dont think it comes in wine red, now I know its not the smartest idea to buy a guitar only for its color, and I probably wont. I have seen the LP classic custom comes in the wine red but doesnt have the push/pull stuff. I guess I'm just excited to finally get a Gibson and want to explore all options before spending this much money. Any opinions on this classic custom?? Or opinions in general on buying a new Gibson LP?? I know it comes down to sound and how she feels but any input from you guys would be awesome, thanks !!!!

Hi, the Traditional Pro Guitar Center version comes in Wine Red. Has coil splitting. It's also one of the less popular color for Traditional Pro so you can probably get a great discount over the list price. Go to a GC and check it out.

Re: Soon to be new Gibson owner

There is a number of different "Traditional" models out there. Those that say "Traditional Pro" are exclusive to Guitar Center. Those that say "Traditional 1960" are exclusive to Sam Ash. The rest are available anywhere, possibly including Sam Ash and Guitar Center.

I bought the Iced Tea LP, with normal controls and Burstbucker Pro Pickups, it is totally awesome, it goes well with my Fender Blues Jnr.

Re: Soon to be new Gibson owner

I have one of the Classic Customs in wine red. I LOVE that finish too!

It's a great guitar. However, you'll really need to spend some time playing both to see what works and sounds best for you. Some folks find trying to push or pull the knobs in the middle of a tune a bit cumbersome, but that's going to purely subjective to the player. I'm sure others can use the knobs like it's second nature. If you can get the effects you want with a pedal board rather than using the push/pull knobs that opens the door to a Classic Custom.

I think you'll be happy with either model, just try them both out if you can before you put down some cash.

Re: Soon to be new Gibson owner

I can also vouch for the Classic Custom---I have the Antique natural, the tones are pretty sweet, both clean and overdrive---definitely check-out/play one, dude!!

I agree dude, and I play mostly metal, I just thought the feature of being able to split them might be cool.

Ya, I really wasnt thinkin of using the push/pull in the middle of a song, just using the different tone options for a whole song, I like the extra bling on the Customs too !!!!!

Definitely, try em both. The push/pull thing is a very individual oriented option. I'd rather have that custom. But thats me.

Re: Soon to be new Gibson owner

Go play both and you'll know. I strongly prefer my classic customs to my LP traditional pro. Mine are '07 classic customs so I can't vouch for the newer ones. I have a 2012 wine red LP trad. pro and yes I bought it strictly for the color. It's not my favorite right now. I'm not real happy with the nashville bridge, but that will change shortly enough. Cough... Faber.

Don't forget that you can rewire any LP to do whatever you want, so chose based on feel and not electronics. I really like having the push/pull option for clean tones, but I definitely forget I've got a PUP split in the middle of playing live.

(I swapped the knobs out for reflectors btw because the smaller top hat knobs it came with were hard for me to pull out in the middle of a song. Oh and I switched the caps and wiring on the push/pulls to the tone pots. They are the volume knobs from the factory. These pictures are pre reflector knobs.)

Here's some wine to quench your thirst:

Re: Soon to be new Gibson owner

I had a Trad pro in wine red from 2010. If it were me I would go with the classic custom in wine red. You can always add coil tapping later to it. I would add 50's style wiring too.
