New (older) Les Paul Day
This guitar
![]() didn't last long. Yesterday I walked into a shop and saw a nice Black custom for a good price...it has a headstock repair which doesn't bug me. So today I took the Blue V, the money from my tax refund (finally getting money back is nice) and bought the Custom and am I ever glad I did. It is an 01 so it has an actual ebony board (not that I have anything against richlite) which is smooth....like maple. It is a dark sounding Custom which is something I have always looked for. Ebony with a Maple top usually gives that treble spike that some love but I don't like much. This guitar doesn't have that issue. The pickups are the 498T and 490R. The stock pickups are nice on this guitar and I am so sick of pickup swapping that even if they weren't I'd probably leave them in place even if they left something to be desired. ![]()

Grats!
+1 on buying "used"..always a helluva lot more bang for your buck imo. That's a sweet guitar. I've always loved the black ones.

Re: New (older) Les Paul Day
This afternoon I tried out a new Custom....with the 498T 490R combo. It sounds NOTING like mine. Not even a little bit. This got me thinking what the deal could be so I went home and pulled the pickups out to have a look at the back.
They are Seth Lovers, which explains a lot. What impresses me is that I have been blasting through ENGL and Diezel amps...and the pickups dont squeal. Granted my gain is only at about 10:00 but on an Powerball or VH4 that is enough gain to kill farm animals.
