Help me identify this Les Paul!

I am thinking about buying this, but I have no idea what model Les Paul this is... All I know is that it's a Gibson and it's a 92 model with a serial number of: 91782448.

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

I'm no expert but it looks like a LP studio to me. Also looks like some serious tarnish going on with the tailpiece and pickup covers from those pics. Nice chainsaw case though.

Truss rod cover is upside down...

What's that weird rectangular spot in the finish? Did a sticker used to be on there?

Ask the guy for more pictures.

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

I'm just waiting on him to respond back... How much would you estimate it's worth if it's a LP Studio? He's asking $650 for it.

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

I went here Gibson Guitar: Talk 2 Us, Electric and Acoustic Guitars, Bass Guitars, Baldwin Pianos and

And put in the serial number and a brief description. A business day or two later I got a standard message about sending them pictures and additional information, which I did. A few hours later they sent me the year and model. Very nice.

Wouldn't hurt to give it a shot as well, if you have that kind of time

Studio with tarnished hardware. Consider what it would cost you to replace the bad pieces, and also play the 'damned thing' to see if it is worth even considering it!!!

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

650? I wouldn't go any higher than 575 on that one.. I mean, it's beat up a bit and I don't think that's going to sell very fast at that price (not the prettiest finish around). Ya IMO 600 tops... Offer 575, don't give more than 600... That's my opinion.

Well I'd make sure first that it's not a fake. Really need to seem more pics of the guitar first before you jump on it.

I'm not really sure on the value. Run a search on ebay for '92 studios, if in fact that is the right model. That will at least give you an idea.

I'd say $650 is a little high for a studio based just on the condition of the guitar from the photos. Maybe closer to $500-$550. But that's just my opinion.

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

Clearly a '92, made on the 178th day of the year. I'll let you count.
Les Paul Studio. The case is from late 70's early 80's. Didn't come with the guitar.
It's a good era for Les Paul's. If the price is right and you like it, pull the trigger!

I think the smartwood tops had more grain to them. Looks to me like it could have been striped and had a clear put on it.

yeah I don't think it's a Smart Wood either , though only the later 2000's had the leaf the earlier ones had "Smart Wood" on the trc . And keystones . They did make a Smart Wood standard though .Someone needs to rescue that poor thing .

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

I'd guess a Wine Red Studio that's been stripped. 2 piece top so it wasn't Ebony or Alpine White. They'd have had 3 pieces for the top. $500-$600 would be a good price, no more than $650. ymmv

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

Pics not great but my guess is

Early 90's Studio (Ebony Fretboard)

2 piece maple top

490R 490T

Worth up to 650.

I like it a lot.

Its got a hell of a squared tan mark on the belly!

It's pretty ugly tho, but for the right price who gives a shit.

Where's the hole for the PG ?

Re: Help me identify this Les Paul!

Just FYI, NEW studios (Faded finishes) can be had for 650 a piece if you get the right 150$ off coupon at guitar center/MF.

This one is old, tarnished and a mystery (Is that the right period case, Was the finish stripped, whats up with the corrosion?). I suppose if you really dig the guitar and you really want a chainsaw case, maybe. I'd personally not go more than 500-550 for it.

Yes it's old, and your point is what exactly? Pretty obvious it's a 90s Studio. Corroded parts can be replaced for minimal cost. As long as there are no other major issues ie; breaks/craks it could end up being a great score. The thing with the older(90s) Studio's is they aren't chambered and with the ebony board do sound pretty damned good with a good set of pups and wiring imho. My .02 fwiw

Good catch on the Ebony board, I didn't even notice it. I agree, decent price, has lots of potential.

By the way, those chainsaw cases sell for around $150.00. Not that they are good looking but they take care of the guitar for sure!

OP this is what you need to do.

Maybe we should start an LP rescue, for mistreated and abused LPs.

I'm still considering it... Hoping I can go and take a look at it soon. If the body is good I might offer him $500-$550. Should there already be a pickguard hole on it? Or were they not stock on the studios? And what parts would I have to replace? And how would I get the tarnish off of the pickups?

Pick guard hole is no big deal. Might have to replace the tail piece and bridge. As for the pick up covers, go to the pickups section of Tonefreaks and ask the folks in there.
