Volume Pot ...Has Anyone Else Noticed This?

I bought a LP Jr HB for a project recently
After I got it home, foolin around with it , I noticed when you turn the volume down ,all the top end disappears from the signal....So I look inside the cavity, sure enough, the pickup lead and the output jack lead were wired to the wrong places on the pot ,from the factory. The pickup was going to the wiper, center lug, just like on all those 50s-60s Harmony & Kay guitars you got at the flea market. The ones that give you that totally muffled sound when you turn the volume down

It's because the volume pot, which is essentially a adjustable resistor, is also taking some of the treble signal out into the ground. This is normal, because most guitars nowadays are wired like this. To stop this phenomena, i believe what you do is soldier a "treble bleed" cap onto the volume pot. As to exactly how, I do not know, but I am sure if you google treble bleed you will find a lot of DIY tutorials.

Correct me if I am wrong, I am an electronics noob What I said was based my understanding from researching the same topic about one year ago

No ,you just turn the wires around the right way,put the jack on the wiper and the pickup(s) on the outside lug.....

If you put a treble bleed in there with the wires still reversed , you still get a muffled sound ,with no bottom end ...kinda like a sick wah

I have a couple week old Jr Special with P-90s and it's wired correctly.

How the hell does the factory make a mistake like that and how does QA not catch it?

Im not a wiring expert, but isn't that exactly what 60's wiring is? Gibson has been doing that for years. I think if you swith the wires you get 50's wiring.

Re: Volume Pot ...Has Anyone Else Noticed This?

I have purchased a few Gibsons between 2009-2012 including one of the new 60's SG Jnr's. They have all been wired correctly. I only know this as I always scrap the 300k linear volumes for 500k audio taper as a preference.

I reckon yours is probably just a one off?

P.S. Your Champ 600 mods transformed that little poodle into a snarling dog. Thanks

It's not.

Top is modern wiring, bottom is 50's.

On Alvin's guitar, the pickup was wired to the center lug of the volume pot, if I'm reading his post right, which is not correct under either of those wiring schemes.
Raizor likes this.
