NGD - 1992 Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus

Just picked this up today - found it in my local Craigslist. 20 year old guitar kept in the case most of it's life. Even had the original sales receipt bought at Dave's Guitar Shop here in Dallas for $1650.

Let me know what you think.

Also - What's the best way to clean the frets and nickel hardware? Not to make them pretty, because they are aged nicely, but just to get any major gunk out of the crevasses. I'll do a SEARCH, but if you have a quick tip or a link - that would be great.

Here you go. Came with original brown case with pink lining. I'M IN HEAVEN. Can't wait to get some new strings on it.

classic, axepilot, JCarno and 4 others like this.

Re: NGD - 1992 Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus

Nice!

You can clean the fretboard with naphtha (lighter fluid), but it doesn't really look like it needs that from what I see in the pics. You can also polish the frets - I use a Micro Mesh 4000 grit sanding pad to polish my frets. The nickel hardware has the look that a lot players lust over - worn in. I'd leave it as is.

I say restring it and rock out.

Truly beautiful. Should have checked Craig's List in Dallas. Nothin' like that here. Enjoy!
Hope the price was right...but if not, you got a beauty there.

Yeah - I'm thinking of just taking an old tooth brush to the edges of the frets to get the loose dirt out, applying a bit of fretboard oil, and being done with it.

Re: NGD - 1992 Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus

I need a 92 to complete my ensemble. I hope I find one as nice as yours - it is perfect! Nice big grain with just the right amount of flame. I like how it almost forms around the burst. I even like the offset grain and uneven color. Very organic.

Seriously, look for me if you ever want to sell it!!!!!

Nice score Fireproof! I've been eying the classic myself, but the newer ones seem to have a green tint to the pearl inlays, not to fond of the green. Your inlays appear to be normal.

kez, i totally agree. i think the earlier classics from the early 90's have the white inlays. the mid 90's to todays have the greenish look, i believe.

Sadly, I have administration blocked request sh!t on my job so can not see the pics. So much free porn viewers around...
Congrats anyway and welcome to the club!
I cleaned dirt with gasoline bought in small bottle in pharmacy. That's really a fuel with no grease stuff in so it pretty dries fretboard. Then I oiled it with Dunlop 65 (don't use it too much!), left for 24 hours, cleaned the rest off and it looked pretty well. Rosewood felt alive again. Somehow after job done, frets came up nicely itself.

You don't like "clownbursts", but don't know what a "clownburst" looks like? You say you don't like them, then ask if that guitar IS one.

So....................of course I just HAVE to ask the obvious question............How does one know that they do not like clownbursts when if in fact, one doesn't know what a clownburst looks like?

Sorry dude, I just HAD to ask! haha..................all in good fun!

When I Google 'clownburst' i see this:

OP's new guitar looks similiar to these, but his has more flame (wich is good). Those on the pic above don't have so much flame and don't look so nice as the '92 Classic. So I was wondering if this one also is called a clownburst.

A clownburst is just a sunburst with a very bad paintjob.

Well, I think I got an okay deal. Not a great deal. Older classics (and particularly '91 and '92 years) bring more money than more recent years. As do the plus tops with the flame. Seem to range between $1500-1900 depending on condition. Lots of talk about early nineties being a high point in Gibson quality control, plus no green inlays at that point yet, etc. I googled '91-'93 Classic Plus sales, plus looked up completed ebay listings, then took the condition into account (this one was 2nd owner, case queen, no buckle rash, not a ding on it and I've looked hard, and came with original sales receipt, etc). So I paid near the high end of the range, but it just felt RIGHT in my hands, you know? And I've been watching local ads for a long time for an old LP in mint condition so I didn't want to miss out.

Yes - the lack of green inlays was a key reason I wanted it. Not that there's anything wrong with snot green, I just prefer these. They have just enough tint to them to look older/aged.

LOL. Yeah - I didn't clean it. I just knocked some loose dirt off the saddle with a tooth brush and made sure the slots were clean. Otherwise I left it. Looks awesome!!

Thanks. I looked up some posts here and in my guitar repair book to find that good ol' lighter fluid works for removing gunk. There were just some sticky "gunk" on the fretboard that I needed to clean off. So I did that, then re-oiled it with fretboard oil and it's great.

Rest easy - it still looks old/vintage, lol.

Oooh. Nice axe. I always associated "clownburst" with the shades of red and yellow... as in not enough dark red, and way too yellow. Regardless, you've got a nice guitar. Are you going to keep the stock pickups? Personally, I dig the 500T in the bridge. Some say it's a one trick pony, but I think it's one hell of a trick

Thanks - I appreciate it.

I'm planning on leaving it stock for now. I'm just a bedroom hack and don't play in a band, so it sounds just lovely to me right now.
