MIM Fenders destroy Epi and Gibby.

pot officially stirred

Though cheap-ass Fender knockoffs, with a genuine Gibson pickup destroys them all.

OP, you wouldn't be the first guy to fit genuine Gibson pickups into a cheap copy, and end up happy with the sound. This guy did it, and spent less than $200 on the guitar:

Re: Is a Gibson really worth it, or is one better off to go Epiphone.

I think it depends on your personal preference. Some people do prefer to play Epiphones and I know people who prefer the sound of Epi pick-ups over Gibby. I personally prefer the feel of a Gibson to an Epiphone. But really it's up to each individual Guitarist to decide whether they think they prefer the Epiphone or the Gibson. Whether or not it's worth the money, to you, depends on how you want your Guitar to sound and feel to play. =)

Didn't he already say he owned a Gibson? I don't care how good you are, if you don't have two nickels to rub together, you don't spend the last one on a guitar. If you already have a Gibson, enjoy it.

From the top of the line Gibson all the way to entry level, people on this site mod the hell out of them. People with R9's pay 2800 dollars to Kim at Historic Makeovers to get them right. It is never enough.

and for the record, people pay the Fender Custom shop thousands of dollars to replicate a Mexican Fender played by a famous person, so technically, MiM Fenders beat the tar out of Epiphones and maybe even Gibsons (since you pay the Gibson Custom Shop thousands to replicate other Gibsons, not Epiphones)

Interesting topic for discussion.

I can't believe it hasn't been covered before.

Riveting dialogue by the way.

Carry on.

Epi/other copy users will say yes, Gibson users say will say no.

I personally think Gibsons are a bit overpriced. Having said that if a guitar is giving you exactly what you want in terms of tone, playability and look you can't put a dollar value on it.

This is pretty good advice right here.

I just purchased a 50's Tribute Gibson Studio for $725, but had I the opportunity to get the Ace Frehley Budokan Epi for the same price, instead of more, I may have very likely done it...but honestly...there was a part of me that fell asleep with visions of a Gibson headstock in my mind.

I've currently got an Epi G400, and it's a really nice guitar. I had an Epi Special II in the past, and it was also a really nice guitar...though not as nice as the G400...set neck, fancy inlays, and four knobs and all...

When I was looking into getting this Lester...I went out and played about twelve different Les Pauls in an afternoon, including two Epiphone Black Beauties.

In the end, my favorite of the bunch (in my price range, I didn't try any Standards or Customs) was a Satin Studio. I got a slightly upgraded version of that guitar...and it arrives on Wednesday.

In the end, a friend of mine put it to me best, if you're just playing in your basement, it's best to get a guitar that you love and that looks cool and the choice is yours.

Re: Is a Gibson really worth it, or is one better off to go Epiphone.

I'm foaming at the mouth to get a Gibson Shred. But, like others have said don't go overboard when starting out, get something and wear the hell out of it. Grow into a Gibson. My guitars are MIM strats and a EPI Goth. When I feel I can do a Gibson justice I will then buy one. Don't make a expensive mistake and later find that guitar playing is not for you.

Ummmmmmmm, I think he played a Firebird over a Marshall amp in the Kiss-audition. And he owned an Ovation Breadwinner, which must have been an expansive guitar, too. I think it was a matter of likes, not of money...
Never mind, though
BTW, I'd always go for the Gibson

Re: Is a Gibson really worth it, or is one better off to go Epiphone.

I wasn't expecting this much feedback. I'm not saying anyone is wrong, or right. Yes, I am aware Gibson would destroy epiphone ($1500 better make a difference). I used to own a LP studio, yes, the cheap one (teenager). I loved that thing, but traded for a Epiphone LP standard with Seymour Duncan ApH-2's (with some other stuff of course.)but hey, everyone buys what they want and what they like.
