What!! Take away the binding and cosmetics on a Standard or Custom, you're left with a Studio. Embarrassing that your another Aussie. Where do you think Studio's are made? In Africa?? In USA.

I guess the Doublenecks can be considered there own beast, but why just Alpine white LP Customs? Seems like you'd make them where you make all the other ones.

anyone have any insight on that one?
My tour guide when I took the tour last year told us that they make the White LP Customs there because it is a special paint job.

I came across this DVD and uploaded these 2 clips for those who haven't seen them. It is a show called Some Assembly Required, they are building a Les Paul from scratch. KIRK

Re: Gibson USA factory tour

Thanks for the video links Kirk. That program affirmed what I think whenever I see a behind the scenes tour of a factory.

You can have QC checks at every stage of production but these are still volatile pieces of wood being fashioned into guitars by imperfect human beings. There will be lemons (as well as cherries) coming out of there when they're making 100's a day.

i worked there(Nashville) back in '96. probably around 85% of the ees play guitar. i worked in the neck dept.

then, the ee discount was 50%. i put my name down for a Std + but the backorder list was so long that I left before I ever got one.

when i was there applying and taking the aptitude test, Don Felder came in to take a tour. Joe Walsh was supposed to be with him but wasn't feeling well. the Eagles were playing Starwood...

he glanced over at me while i'm sitting there and give me the oh well look while about 5 people were licking his boots.

later on, Joe Walsh did take his tour and walked right by the machine i was working on at the time. t-shirt, old blue jeans, glasses, surrounded by folks...

some cool times !!

There's a Gibson store attached to the factory. Show up for the tour about 30 minutes before and play everything. Stay 30 minutes after and play everything again.

Around the 3:00 mark of the first clip it says all guitar backs are made of three pieces. I didn't think that was the case.

What do they sell in the shop? I'm in the market for a guitar and will be visiting my sister in Nashville soon. Do they sell guitars there?

Very nice, I have been ih the Kalamazoo factory with Heritage guitars in the basement and ProCo cables on the main level. Very cool to see where it was back in the day of the classics.
