Les Paul's new friend and ?s about pleck'd setup

(The Stratocaster) Just arrived today. The neck is fast and the action was set lower than any guitar I have ever played. I actually had to raise it bit.

Has anyone else had to mess around with a pleck'd guitar to get it set up right? It would seem that the factory setting would be the optimal height and etc. off the pleck'd system. What are the advantage's to a pleck'd guitar if we are still having to do a set up after purchase?

I was just telling someone else that I had the frets on
my Slash VOS rounded down a little by hand and it made
a huge difference over the factory plek system.

And a setup is a must.

I thought my guitar played great out of the box (and it did)
but a good luthier will improve its playability.

Like my luthiers says, "If it's played by man's hands, it should be built by man's hands".

And Welcome.

Re: Les Paul's new friend and ?s about pleck'd setup

The Plek system is great and it addresses the frets very nicely, but I agree that you will still need to setup the guitar. I'm surprised that you had to raise the action on yours, just about every one I've played needed to be lowered.

When my Luthier was going over my 2008 Standard he told me that the frets were the best he's ever seen on any Gibson straight from the factory, and he's been a full time Luthier for 10 years. I am VERY pleased with this guitar after the setup, it is sooooo smooth that I love playing it!!

The post was amibguous. That Tangerine Strat arrived today and needed to be raised. The Les Paul needed to be lowered. The Strat was lower than any guitar I have seen.

Re: Les Paul's new friend and ?s about pleck'd setup

My R8 was Plekked from Gibson - and played well - but my Lutheir did wonders for its playability with a good setup and some nut work. The plek machine cut the nut - but damn were those nut slots high! My luthier took them way down, gave me a little more relief in the neck, and the setup was just amazing. The fretwork was great - it was the other stuff that needed some adjustment.

Re: Les Paul's new friend and ?s about pleck'd setup

I took my Les Paul to luthier and the set up was just okay. Maybe I need to find a better one, but he was very deferent to the pleck'd set up. I am guessing that the Strat was maybe 1/64th. I wish I could have measured it, but it was too low. I still cannot believe I have every said that.

Re: Les Paul's new friend and ?s about pleck'd setup

Here's where the difference is on the Plek system:

Your guitar is Plek'd by a machine that does it's work by numbers. Your luthier/tech sets up your guitar by feel. The Plek'd system does a great job of getting the guitar to Gibson's specs, but your tech can come back, smooth out the rough spots, and tweak the setup to better suit you. Also, sense the entire U.S. doesn't share Nashville's climate, the setup will almost always need some adjusting when it reaches its destination.
