Junior?

Im searching for my next guitar. I mostly play indie-rock, alternative but i want something versatile.
All guitars I own have humbuckers, but im starting to look at guitars with singlecoils.

I really like Les Paul Juniors but the lack of a neck pickup makes me wonder.
And I don't really like SG's.
Dont like any of the Juniors Gibson produce today, but maybe and older one would be the best bang for the buck.

Other recommendations or do you think a Les Paul Jr would do the job?

Budget: 1300$

Cheers

Re: Junior?

Get a Junior. You already have a guitar with a neck pickup.

I find Jr's very versatile with volume and tone changes.

They also are very responsive to pick attack.

$1300 gets you in the used Historic territory. That would be my choice. (it IS my choice)

I have two and wouldn't part with them.

If I want a neck PU I'll play my gold top or one of my Fenders.

My pair of reissues ( an 06 58 and an 01 57):

Leendrix, schaapie, Mantis and 2 others like this.

Gibson Custom. Sorry. They used to be the "Historic" division.

Re: Junior?

Juniors are awesome and a lot more versatile than a lot of people realize. I second/third/whatever the vote for the used Custom Shop reissue. The thick neck on them is super nice and you get a one-piece body.

If you need a neck pickup, Specials are nice, though despite looking like Juniors with an extra pickup, they are extremely different animals in my opinion. Might be something you like better personally, but I'm with the guys above in thinking you might not really need it with your other guitars still in the picture.

Juniors are VERY sensitive to volume and tone knob changes, as well as your pick attack. I'm primarily an alternative/rock/blues type player, but I use mine for jazz as well. No problems and it works great. You'll need completely different amp and effect pedal settings than your humbucker guitars, though, something to bear in mind.

What don't you like about the Juniors Gibson is producing today, the fretboard material or something else?

You've got a lot about Juniors you don't like to be even considering one. Buy a used one you won't lose money on if you sell it, or just skip 'em.

The reason why I dont like the current juniors is the obeche fretboard...
And I believe the Billy Joe model has a hotter P90? Im looking for something softer.

Gibson Les Paul Junior Special Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups | GuitarCenter

$687.94 This weekend from GC after discount and tax.

2 pickups, solid mahogany body, bound neck. You'd need to get it in 1 of the 4 gloss finishes to get the coupon to apply. Gloss Yellow would be my pick

Re: Junior?

I love my Junior. It's hard to describe exactly what all a Junior can do but the more I play and gig with mine the less I use my other guitars. Anyway. This one isn't mine, and it is "newer" but the price looks pretty killer and it sounds like it's in great shape:

Just a thought.

Re: Junior?

My Edwards is pretty sweet too. Not on par with my CS '57 RI, but for $750 used it is a screamin' guitar. The Fender Stratosonic is a cool double P90 guitar with a Gibson scale neck and chambered mahogany body. Also cost me $750 used.

i wouldn't fear that Obeche too much, feels ok to me.
you may be better off looking into a Special, seems like you want a 2 pick up guitar more than a Junior.

Re: Junior?

I'd just get the special dude. If you're not into the minimalist gimmick, a special is a junior with a neck pickup.

Also, that new special Gibson USA is offering is a lot of bang for your buck.

What's there not to like of the new Juniors? I got my gloss nitro tobacco burst for $699 and it rocks!!! And dont worry about a neck pickup. Eddie Van Halen recorded a shitload of classic rock using only a bridge pickup

So, I have the 60's Tribute with 2 P90 pickups. If I play using only the bridge pu it will sound the same as playing a Junior? Or not? If not, why could that be please. Thanks

Assuming you are talking about the LP tribute it won't sound the same as the body make up is different.

Jr = slab mahogany

LP = slab mahogany with arched maple cap on top.
