whats under the pickup covers?

Hey sorry if this is a total noob question, but whats under the pickup covers? I got the new 2012 standard. I can kinda see it with a set of cream pups and no covers. If I wanted to switch pickups how does that work with the pcb electronics and all the fancy taps?

Chances are they are black but really...there really is no telling until you look. I had 57's in my traditional plus. One was black and cream zebra and the other one was dual black.

Re: whats under the pickup covers?

I just had my covers removed from my Traditional Mahogany. The neck pick up is nice and clean. The bridge looks atrocious. A ton of excess wax on it and the tape they wrap them with was overlapping the top of the pick up. Seriously considering putting the covers back on. Both of my pick ups are black.

You can simply pull the existing pickups (the covers stay with them) and put in a different set of pickups. You'll want to make sure that you get a set of four-wire pickups (this allows you to coil tap) rather than two-wire. A decent tech will be able to install them with pcb electronics and coil taps intact. Keep the old pickups with the guitar in case you decide to sell it at some point in the future; most people don't consider pickup swaps "upgrades" when they're *buying* a used guitar (though most folks consider it an upgrade when they own the guitar, of course), and will want the originals available.

Re: whats under the pickup covers?

Most likely double blacks, but you won't know unless you look.

You can find out without taking the covers off, though. Remove one of the polepiece screws and shine a light inside the cavity. Now you know that bobbin color. For the other bobbin, you can carefully remove one of the small phillips screws that holds the bobbin to the backing plate. Same thing as before - you should be able to see the bobbin color through there.

Hope that helps.

Re: whats under the pickup covers?

As others have said, under the covers is most likely double blacks, however it is possible to have a zebra or double cream I suppose. I just took the covers off of my 03 Standard last week. I used a razor blade and just cut the solder, then removed the wax and you're rockin!

(sorry the pictures are upside down, I'm a photo noob and was using my phone)

Do the pick ups sound louder? Just curious.

I should add that I removed the pickups from the rings to take the covers off. When re-installing after I got the covers off, they seemed to me a little louder. After about a minute of playing with the pick up height, I honestly can't tell a difference. The pickups sound exactly the same to me with the covers on or off. If you don't change the height of the pickups in the rings after removing the covers you could possibly have a volume difference, but nothing a slight adjustment shouldn't fix.

What's a good way to remove the rest of the wax from the top of the pick up without damaging anything? Had my covers removed and my bridge looks ugly. Thanks

They are double blacks for sure. I emailed Gibson this same question after ordering my 2012 Standard.

Re: whats under the pickup covers?

Just scrape it off with something dull enough not to scratch up your bobbin. Then wipe vigorously with a rag.

Thanks for the response. I'm at the rag stage then. One last question. I mentioned earlier the tape that's wrapped around the pick ups overlapped the top a bit. Is that tape a available so I can rewrap them? I just want to clean up the look. It was too much for me to expect the local shop to do it when they removed the covers. Here on out doing everything myself.

Re: whats under the pickup covers?

Just pull off some of the tape and cut it. It's not a big deal really. It should be wrapped around a couple tines. If you want to replace it thats fine too. You could wrap it with electrical tape if you want to. You won't see it from the top.

Just an FYI, Dimarzio actually holds the rights to double cream, So you wont see that color on any new pups that arent from them. I have seen some small boutique makers that have gotten away with it, but thats about it. Who woulda thought!!

Yep, I was just about to say that. They won't be double cremes. However, Gibson did do a run of pickups (I think BB pros, and I want to say like 400 or 200 of them?) and I've seen a one-off '57 Classic that an employee made.

Re: whats under the pickup covers?

the way around that used to be sell them with covers, chrome/nickle etc. I think Seymour Duncan has even stopped doing them as well. You could custom order say a JB in double cream with a chrome cover...and then just remove the cover.
