Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
After I returned my 4th Epi LP Ultra-III for fret buzz, I went to a different dealer to look for another Epi LP.
However, my eyes kept being drawn to a very warm looking Honeyburst. After playing some that were more expensive, I decided to buy the one that drew the most interest: the Honeyburst '50s Tribute. Thus, Millie was added to the family ("mil" is Gaelic for "honey," so..."Millie").

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
Got my first one (my '02 Epi LP Standard Plus) brand-new in '02, when I was 19. Saved up my first 3 pay-checks to get it.:
![]() Poor girl hasn't been so much as looked at, since I got my Gibson LP Classic. But, she's a keeper, even if just for sentimental value?

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
My first electric was a LP copy, but one of my two dream guitars was a black Les Paul Custom.
I was looking for a used one, due to price. Then one day I heard a local store was having a Dutch Auction from Tuesday to Saturday. They were open late on Thursdays so I went after work to see what they had. (It was 30% day on Thursday) There, in a corner of the guitar room--all by itself, contrasting with a wall of Superstrats and shredder guitars, was a used Les Paul Custom. I picked it up & played it, and loved it--I checked the price. I could have afforded it at full price, so I was tempted to get it for 30% off, but decided the two extra days & an extra 20% off would be a good idea. Besides nobody bought stuff like that until the 50% off on Saturday. I almost went to the store on Friday for 40% off, but forced myself to wait. I figured if it was meant to be mine--it would wait. If not, it was meant to be somebody else's. Friday was a rough day though. On Saturday morning I slept in, and so I rushed to get ready and get to the store. It was packed when I got there, and the guitar room was in the back. I fought my way to the guitar room, and breathed a sigh of relief as it still sat there alone in the corner. Squeezing through the mob to the corner I picked up the Les Paul and strummed a chord--either an A or an E I believe--but probably an E. Most of the shredder gawkers looked at me, a few said, "nice guitar" and at least a couple appeared to be kicking themselves--they got there before me, but I was holding the Les Paul. I went to the the nearest salesman and said--"I am buying this guitar." He got the case for it, and I looked around the store and bought a few accessories as well. (Well 50% off right?) It had been modded, it was used, it was on sale, and people wanted shredder guitars, so I got a great price--even after I got new pickups, machine heads and bridge for it. And here's what it looks like-

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
I acquired my first Les Paul Standard (new) by walking into Coast Music, Bournemouth, in 1979, and giving them £399. In return, they let me take the guitar home.

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
Summer break in 2008 or 2009? My dad agreed to buy me my first "real" guitar and I got the Epi Slash tobacco burst at GC in Town Square at Vegas. I love the guitar and I've had a few changes to it now. Absolutely a beast.

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
I got a job at the age of 15 and I worked for a whole month and bought myself a LP Special with a little help from the old man. A year later I did the same thing, except it was 2 months and the guitar was a 98 LP Classic which i still own to this day. I'm happy I stuck out with getting a job and owning a kickass LP Classic

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
1992 in a Kansas pawn shop while on a student exchange. My 74 deluxe that was already routed for humbuckers. Saw it on the wall for $400 and bargained them down to $320.
The only downside was that I didn't have the foresight to purchase the 69 Paisley Tele next to it listed at $500 given what they are going for now.

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
Back I. 2010 I was looking around for my first Gibson. Found a deal for a brand new Gary Moore BFG on eBay, with a price a good $500-$750 less than stores here in Aus. So I jumped on it.
It arrived a week later, but there where a few problems with it so I contacted the seller to send it back. In the end I had to pay $55 for a courier to return it to them, but I got a full refund otherwise. That was the end of it, as far as I knew, so continued looking for a Gibson. Then, out I the blue, 2 months later I got a call from the courier company. They said they haven't been able to delivery it, and unless they can in the next couple of days they will destroy it. So I gave them my address and it was delivered tht day. I oukdn't contact the seller so I figured it was mine. Spent 20 minutes and fixed it up. Been with me nice then and also fun to show off my $55 Gibson :-P |

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
How times have changed.
I started playing sometime in the late 50's, and didn't get serious untill 1959 or early 1960. For Christmas '61, my grandfather (the local Fender dealer in Leavenworth, Ks) gave me a 1958 LP standard. He told me later that he couldn't sell the thing. Don |

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was asleep in my bed when I started hearing weird noises coming from outside. I rolled over to face my window and noticed flashing lights. I crawled to the window, look through the blinds and see a saucer shaped craft landing in my back yard and little green men coming out of the bottom of it down a long ramp. 6 of them are carrying a black case with gibson usa written on it. They looked like pall bearers as they walked towards my back door with this case. Their eyes were huge, their mouths small. Just as I start to reach for my AR-15 I hear the faintest knock on the back door...wait...who am I kidding...I got a bonus at work and bought it...

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
In the summer of 1993, there place where I took guitar lessons was dropping Gibson from their product line. My teacher knew that I learned to play guitar because of Page and Frehley, and told me that a ridiculous sale was coming up. He told me to pick out a Les Paul from the floor and he would hold it for me until I could talk to my parents.
I was young 15 year boy at the time, but I had been playing guitar nearly 6 years by then. It took some convincing, but they agreed to go look at the guitar that weekend. That Saturday afternoon we walked into the store, my teacher ran to the back and brought out the ebony studio with gold hardware I had picked out two days before. I plugged into an old crate amp (new at the time) and ripped off Kiss’ “I Stole Your Love”. My parents looked at the price tag $899 and said, sorry we can’t see getting him a guitar that costs nearly a thousand dollars. My teacher explained that the guitar didn’t have the sale price on it, and that the actual price was $450. 5 minutes later I walked out with the guitar you see in my Avatar.

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
Worked 4 months like a workaholic; went to store; went through all the guitars and picked the one I thought was the most suitable for me (GT 2008 Traditional).
Totally worth it

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
My highschool music teacher had a tobacco burst Norlin I would play everyday.
It wasn't technically mine, but I played it before school, for two periods during music classes where I was allowed to do "independent studies" in the practice rooms most days, and after school. Every day. I even borrowed it over the weekend occasionally. He wouldn't sell it. He didn't even like when I tuned it to dropped D. ...but he let me play the piss out of it. I'm very grateful.

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
My dad's friend has a 85' Custom Ebony which I drool all over every time I come to his house (he's living across the street from my house). One day his boy accidently set fire to their house with his firework while his parents were sleeping. They barely make it out without saving anything in the house. I rush into the fire, see the guitar still on the wall, I grabbed it and run like hell before everything collapse.
I later return the guitar to the man. But he let me keep it since I'm risking my life to save it. It becomes my first Les Paul which I still has to this day. It has a few burned mark but everything work perfectly Nah, just kidding, still waiting for my first

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
I had wanted a Les Paul all my life, but never really thought I could justify the cost. One day I was looking at them online and my wife came in to see what I was doing. I showed her the LP i was looking at and she was like "You should totally buy one". I didnt really take her seriously, and kind of blew it off.
2 Days later i was sitting in a meeting at work, looking at the amazon lightning deals and saw a LP pop up at a huge discount. Without even thinking about it i clicked to buy it. The next morning my first LP showed up at my door

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
I had an NJ Warlock from when I was younger, and wanted to start playing again, but wanted a new guitar to motivate myself. I started out looking for a Flying V type guitar, and my research in a roundabout way brought me to MyLesPaul.com forums. At that point, I was looking for an SG or a humbucker equipped mahogany guitar, at least. I went back and forth between Gibson and the cheaper companies, and was almost set on an LTD Viper.
After thinking about it, I decided I wanted to just get an original, instead of a guitar shaped to look it. I got a Gibson SG 61 Reissue from the guitar of the week series, I believe it was week 6, black with gold hardware. I am an AC/DC fan, and thought it would be cool to get a black reissue to be a wannabe Angus. The gold hardware and the orange colored fingerboard binding never really pleased me. Instead of stripping out the hardware and replacing everything, I decided to try and sell. I was posting on MLP at that time and noticed a for sale post by DurtyDevil, he also had a guitar of the week, a Les Paul, but wanted an SG instead. I arranged to meet him for a possible trade, since he lived relatively close by. When I first started playing, I wanted a Gibson, but I came home with a strat copy. I never did forget those explorers and les pauls that originally got my motor going, and I finally have one.

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?

Anyway, my first les paul is a bit of a long story. I went into sound control in Glasgow looking for a Les Paul, but before I had the chance, I spotted a 61 RI sg. I decided to try it and immediately fell in love with it. I hadn't even played the les paul, but I loved that SG. I told the salesman that I wanted it and he said "Are you sure? I know you were interested in the Les Paul's". But I was sure. The fact that it was a good few hundred cheaper made up my mind for me. Anyway, about a week later, I'm in a bar after rehearsals with my bandmates. Time for my round, I go to the bar, buy the drinks and return to our booth. After about 30 seconds, I realized that something was missing (we had a lot of gear in there). It was my guitar case. I hunted round, phoned the police and spoke to my bandmates and the bar manager. No one saw it. I never saw it again. I had some money saved, so a week or so later, I went back to sound control, where I played about 6 or 7 les paul's. The very first one I played was my favourite, so I bought it. I still have it. It's the only guitar I have right now as I had to sell a lot of gear to fund my travels. I'll take it to the grave with me. |

Re: How'd you get ahold of your first les paul?
In 1976, I went into a guitar/music shop that had just opened. He had several nice used guitars T really good prices, including a big ol' Gibson jazz guitar that I almost bought, but then I saw a Black Beauty LP Custom from 1968. The gold TOM and tailpiece hardware had been attacked so bad by sweat that the metal was blistered. I bought it right there for $400 with factory case.
I replaced the bad parts, had that LP for years...sold it when I was out of work with a broken leg. Can't afford to buy another one like it now. mark
