2012 Standard Rant

Just got back from GC and played a few Standards. I'm going to say Gibson should be ashamed for allowing QC to release shotty work. Three out of the four I tried the fret boards all had tooling marks. They werent light marks either. The Gold Top nibs weren't even with the frets they were wider. For 2600.00 those fret boards should be spotless.

Re: 2012 Standard Rant

25% success rate is actually good for Gibson. The bad part is, people will buy those three shitty guitars, and stick up for Gibson, saying nothing is perfect. Meanwhile, ten out of ten PRS guitars come out of the factory perfect in every way.

Shame on you Gibson. You've made the saying 'made in America' a punchline.

So, was this the new 2012 Les Paul Standard, or 2012 2008 Les Paul Standard?

The neck is the main reason I wanted to try the new Standards. I like the 50's neck.

I didn't plug any of them in as I like to hear how they sound not plug in.

The first one I picked up felt great had the least amount of tool marks. I might go back and try this one through an amp. I like the weight on it, felt about the same weight of my 97 Studio. Just playing it without being plug in it sounded great. If the tooling marks weren't there and of course if I had the money this one would've come home with me. This one while I was turning down the volume knob the knob itself fell apart in my hand. The sale associate said this is the the second 2012 standard that a knob has fallen apart. I just chalked that one up to all the people who had touch it.

The GT was the worse as it didn't resonate as much and it sounded dead. That's the reason I checked the fret board. I went checking to see if the high E string was hitting somewhere on the fretboard. This fretboard was the worse.

The other two were played and felt pretty good but not as good as the first.

Now that's a good question. I asked the sale associate for the 2012 Standard. The tag said 2012 Standard but nothing about 2008. The price tag on it was 2599.99... The all had pick guards.

you tried it because you think the new ones have the 50's necks (they have 60's) or you know they have 60's and prefer 50's but wanted to see how the new ones (60's) differ?

2012 Standard have asymmetrical 60's necks and wanted to see how it feels compared to the symmetrical 60's neck.

Re: 2012 Standard Rant

To chime in on this one,

I was at the musicstore in cologne, germany last saturday.
Played a custom shop Les Paul Custom NOS in candy blue (wicked color).
The binding was wider than the body. It wasn't properly scraped. It wasn't properly glued to the body (gaps visible). The nibs also had gaps between them and the frets. Setup was shoddy. Multiple dead spots. Finish not properly buffed out on the backside. Tooling marks in the neck binding. Headstock binding wider than headstock. Jack plate cracked (ootb!).

And it WASN'T the one hanging there for ages. It was a new one, out of the box. Saw the guy take it out of the package and hanging it on the wall just shortly before I asked him If I could have a go.

And what's your conclusion? I prefer 50s too, and this is something I was curious about myself.

It didn't feel thin like the 60's, it felt very comfortable to the point where I didn't even think about thickness of the neck.

I'm going have to play a few more to get a real feel for the neck before I can give a honest answer.

This says a lot - That they took it straight out of the box and hung it on the wall. If I took delivery of a new TV, I would check it for scratches, cracks etc. I'm not saying Gibson are perfect - At all - But surely that's down to the dealer, he should send back faulty stock before it gets put up for sale.
I'm not saying the rest of your review isn't accurate, but I don't understand how the Binding can be wider than the body/headstock?

Re: 2012 Standard Rant

That's interesting with the tooling marks. I too expect a new guitar to be flawless given the price tag. Although I always expect the guitars at Guitar Center to be beat up from all the people picking them up to play with dirty hands, knocking them against stuff in the store, etc.

True but for all of us that have spent that kind of money on a guitar we know that if we look close enough there's always flaws. Retail is rip-off plain and simple and 2,600 for a Gibson is really just mid-range price.

Re: 2012 Standard Rant

A few people in here said it, but I find that most of what is on a wall, or hanging around at Guitar Center is junk and beat up from all of the riff raff that hangs around there. If you get a Gibson from the factory they are not like this.

Looking close enough is one thing, but flaws that are screaming "look at me" is a little different.

That GT should have not even made it out of QC. If anyone lives in the Dallas Area I went to the North Express Way Guitar Center go take a look at the 2012 especially the GT.

Necks on the 2012 Standards are a new asymmetrical 60's neck. A litte fatter than the slim taper 60's neck but not like the 50's rounded profile. If you need the 50's neck you need the 2012 Traditional and not the standard

From Gibson's website

"The necks are a solid one-piece, quarter-sawn mahogany neck is glued in with a traditional mortis & tenon joint, and carved in the popular asymmetrical SlimTaper™ profile"

Neck Species Mahogany Profile Asymmetrical '60s SlimTaper™ Truss Rod Traditional Adjustable Joint Angle 5° (+/- 15 seconds) Adhesive Franklin Titebond

Re: 2012 Standard Rant

I've never been one to blindly champion the brand, but I wonder how the retailers play into this. Do they inspect the instruments before they put them on the floor? Can they reject instruments that aren't up to par?

If enough retailers start rejecting the bad seeds, that would send a message.

I'm not up on the way Gibson markets to the retailers, so perhaps this post might be a tad ill informed.....................

He should do something about it.
If he didnt care about those guitars then I suppose that he doesnt care about any of the other guitars either.
