Question long or short switch les paul studio

I really need a good quality 3 way toggle switch!

Does anyone know if a long toggle switch would fit?
Any advantages to short vs long, as far as durability?
or
Does anyone know the best upgrade part available?

Im a heavy switching fool

They take the short switch because the cap is thinner than a Standard.

Totally the short one, but I've come to realize that for some reazon, the long one seems of better quality. I installed a long in my studio faded, and it almost didn't fit, but the guitar sounds way better, and the switch is of better quality too.

Re: long or short switch les paul studio

I've never heard of any variances between the two. But I've never had a long.

I have a short in my Epi, and I assume short in my Explorer, both work well. The one in the explorer is stiffer though.

Change of switch from short to long does not make your guitar sound "way better".

Unless your previous switch was broken and no sound came out...then yes, it would sound 100x better.

Perhaps he thinks it does make it sound better.

I'd like to hear why.

Perhaps it sounds "switchier" or the added mass increases sustain.

I've got to know.

Maybe it sounds airier and more articulated, because the lack of the backplate free the resonances and all the positive vibrations..

Do you have values for the maplecap thickness of various models? I wasn't aware of it, always have thought, the mahagonyback of the Studio is less thicker than the Standards. Hm..i really dont know the differences in thickness between a Standard, Custom and Studio...

Re: long or short switch les paul studio

I'm pretty sure they always use 1/4" maple cap, but the bodies/backs do vary in thickness. Customs tend to be a little thicker because of the back binding. Also, my Axcess model has a thinner body than a standard by about 1/4" I believe. Only noticeable if you hold them next to each other.

Lol I never said that the sound was getting any better from changing from short to long, I said that the lomg one was of better quality, thats why it sounded better, besides its been known that some studios have some switch problems, so after the change of switch, the sound got clearer.

Re: long or short switch les paul studio

I think the switch in my Studio is going. I've got to open it up tonight and see what's going on. In the middle position, only the neck pup is active.

Re: long or short switch les paul studio

For what it's worth, I just called Gibson headquater and I was told that all the Les Pauls take the long switch. The short ones are for the SG and Semi hollow bodies. I'm just saying what I was told by them. Take it with a grain of salt.

Re: long or short switch les paul studio

I have a Gibson ES-333 that has the long Switchcraft toggle switch in it. I measured it and it will not fit in my Gibson Les Paul Studio Deluxe. It would be OH SO tight is at all. So I say just get the shorter version of the Switchcraft and be done. That;s what I'm going to do.

Re: long or short switch les paul studio

The poll suggests that the short ones provide better durability, probably because the metal is less flimsy than a long one. If you take a short piece of metal vs long piece the longer one will be easier to bend. Its physics!

Re: long or short switch les paul studio

In the Gibson Studio, use a short toggle switch. All other Gibson Les Paul's use long toggle switches.
