Re: A Les Paul Custom built with Richlite!!!

Dammit! I've been ripped-off! I purchased a 2012 Chinese made "Gibson Les Paul Custom", and just found-out that it was built with an authentic ebony fretboard!

Re: A Les Paul Custom built with Richlite!!!

Gibson Realized Selling Cocaine was illegal so they now make Crack.

Its their answer to not buying protected wood. So they now make it.

Sorry, the only good Gibson is a USED Gibson.

I did some research and found-out that Richlite is made from polymers and recycled paper!

that's the only problem I have, the price on these guitars with other fretboard material--my Classsic Custom was justified, but on those real Customs, c'mon, give us a break, LOL!!!

We'll see Gibson inevitably switch over to ultraviolet polyster finishes like Rockenbacker and Taylor has, and we'll see blood on the streets and Henry-hatin' at it's most refined. Even if the guitar sounds like it was carpentered by Christ himself.

Why do we need a break? We either buy the damned things - or we don't.

Plenty of used gear on the market, and Nico's only got his hands on and ruined two or three.

Man, I never do the all-caps thing, but here's ya go:

It wasn't Christ himself that was the carpenter, it was his father. And he was more into harps. :-)

If you got a problem with it just buy used. About 1500 dollars cheaper too

I'm not sure what basis you have for that. For starters, neither is wood.

Micarta is a trademark of Norplex-Micarta industrial high pressure laminates and refers to a composite of linen, canvas, paper, fiberglass, carbon fiber or other fabric in a thermosetting plastic.

Richlite is a dense material made from partially recycled paper and phenolic resin.

Both are essentially identical materials with the trademark being the main difference.

What I dont get is why dont they use Ebonol. Been around for years as a ebony replacement.

People would still be bitching becasue it's not ebony.

I've searched for the material on Google and I'm seeing the same "well, it aint wood" arguments.

Re: A Les Paul Custom built with Richlite!!!

Despite where you stand on this, ebony is just about the holy grail of fret boards. The custom is like this legendary rock guitar, and sadly Gibson is no longer using a vital ingredient.

Sure maybe it's psychological, but I swear it seems like if it sounded decent you wouldn't mind if there were pieces of shit in your guitars. For crying out loud, have some ****ing standards when you're paying over 3000 dollars for a guitar!

My standards can be sourced from playability, tone, and craftsmanship. Not romantics.

Ebonol is technically known as "XXX Paper Phenolic", and is a paper-based high pressure laminate made from layers of black paper and phenolic resin.

... which is basically Richlite.

Maybe one day you guys will actually fvcking do some legwork on this shit.

I remember when I first saw it, in 1986, on a Dean Z SuperStrat. I played it, it was good, I almost bought it. It's been in and out of the spotlight.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

This shit is nothing new, it's not bad or good, but only different, and a real guitarist plays music -- not fretboards.

Ya man, but by that logic "real guitarists" don't have to buy 3000 dollar Gibson customs to play. He or she can make do with a 500 (or whatever) dollar guit.

So, if you're spending that much on a guitar you're probably going for premium everything.

No. By that logic, a real guitarist worries about things like tone and musicality ... not pricetag or fingerboard material.

Sit yourself in front of thirty or forty bar patrons. Make sure you have a decent rhythm section going on. Play a few numbers.

Tell me, with a straight face, that after ten seconds of playing for an audience, that you give two shits rubbed together what sort of wood, or resin, is on your fretboard.

Go on. Tell me that it matters, at that point, what the chemical composition of your fretboard is.

Or, better yet (from a musician's point-of-view) boycott shitty-sounding guitars.

Of course, you'll need a blindfold to do that.

Richlite discussions is done and over. If you can't get over it, sucks to be you, buy something else.
I'll continue to play what ever I want and I recommend all others to do the same.

Re: A Les Paul Custom built with Richlite!!!

The western world is becoming a throw away world anyway. We buy new shit all the time and just dump the old. I work in a chemical company and the amount of raw materials that come from the earth, that is used every day is staggering. It has to run out at some point.
The same with timbers. As worldwide production increases, so does the readily available supply. Henry comes across as a dick, but he is purely a business man. Take no notice of his bullshit rant about 'a new revolution' with the Fireturd guitar. All he givers a shit about is making money.

But, to all the people that say you cant tell Richlite from ebony unless you are 6 inches away, is that the same as saying, Gibson could hollow out your new guitar and fill it full of shit, and you couldnt tell unless you were close enough to smell it?

It would look the same wouldnt it.....River.
But when you pick it up i think you might notice something different..
