Here's a strange one....

Anyone that can fill me in on this guitar, I'm all ears. It's a Custom with silver laquer faded slightly greenish; single layer black binding on the body(no binding on back); block inlays on an unbound neck; full Custom headstock overlay, keystone tuners with snot buttons.

I just bought it from a guy that got it YEARS ago. It has a 1986 serial number. The pickups have been changed out to a Duncan Custom and JB.

Anyone know what this is? It RIPS, and it's wierd.

Looks lilke the headstock isn't bound either. Do you know if its a 'real' custom. I like the look of it. I don't care for unbound fingerboards but the guitar is self looks clean, and the color is interesting. But I like odd things I guess...... I would email the serial number to Gibson. Maybe it was custom ordered.. a true custom.

Re: Here's a strange one....

Greg, that's a beauty! Are you sure the fingerboard isn't bound? In the headstock photo, the fingerboard looks like it has a thin black binding (to match the rest of the binding and nut).

Re: Here's a strange one....

The headstock is clearly bound, it's the black outside of the white. The neck is not bound, but the sides of the fingerboard are lacquered, so they look shiny.

The Custom lights had similar cosmetics but shallow bodies with tummy cuts. The Studio Customs had white binding on body and neck, rosewood boards with dots and maple necks.

I guess it was a prototype or custom order. I'll call Gibson with the serial tomorrow. It's one helluva guitar, and I am torn as to whether to play it or flip it. The greenish tint(as the clearcoat ages) makes it striking, to say the least!

Re: Here's a strange one....

The owner informs me that the original plastic flotation case became home to a cat, so that's why it's in a new case. He also did not get the original pickups back when the Duncans were installed.

I'm stumped.

Re: Here's a strange one....

Benton at Gibson sent me this...

Hi Greg,

Thanks for getting those pics in! Serial number 82829604 and the attached photos appear to be consistent with a 1989 Les Paul Custom that was special ordered with a Silver finish, and black top body binding. Thanks for the inquiry, and I hope this information is helpful!

Best regards,
Benton Cummings

Re: Here's a strange one....

As I previously stated, the neck is UNBOUND . The lacquer on the sides of the board add gloss, making it look bound.

And yes, it would have been a Custom Order.

This is one of the best playing and most resonant Les Pauls of the 80s/90s era that I have owned, and I have owned a TON through my store. I played this bad boy for a ton today and it kept surprising me. My buddy Jim saved my marriage by buying it.

Re: Here's a strange one....

considering its a one off custom order, it may not have the crossbanding and may be solid resulting in less vibration loss. jut a thought.
