Re: Classics Discontinued?

About Time I say! I never liked the fugly inlays or the pups or the neck.

I did however, like the Classic Antique, but again the skinny neck made me avoid it. Also liked the limited edition CustomShop Classics from a few years ago that had the 57 Classic pups and the green or purple figured tops.

But those weren't really the Classic.

Then it would be a Standard with 60's neck.

Re: Classics Discontinued?

Perhaps Gibson is cleaning-up the product lines so-as to put all the pieces in the right places. To my way of thinking, the next step would be to issue a 57 Traditional, 58 Traditional, 59 Traditional, and 60 Traditional model. Essentially, the Traditional models would be bulk production versions of the various Reissues. If they mirror this on the Epi line, then prospective customers would have (3) price-points for models with very familar features. This move would give them continuity with their history, and free-up the Standard and Custom to evolve a bit.
I would also look for them to cut-down on the special editions and streamline production of their core models. Perhaps restrict the Floyds, Robots, Axces, etc, to Studio models only.

This is what I would do at Gibson to allow the company de-evolve into the current economic climate. Merely an opinion, though. YMMV.

When I got mine, it was the only LP I could afford. She's retired now, because the neck is way too skinny for me. She's a great guitar though.

Re: Classics Discontinued?

Holy crap! None of that appeared this morning!

Not the Antique and Premium Plus!

I probably would have taken the Antique over the + but still, its sad not to have those options there.

I doubt they will make a traditional series, that would kill CS's business. Epi Elitist was killing Gibsons so they discontinued that. BTW, dont they have a regular BFG anymore?

I dont think you can get that anymore..CS or USA *Shock!*

Wow, I wonder what the replacement will be, the way I see it, the Classic was a must have for Gibson.

I would if I could. It was the first Paul I bought after getting clean, so it has that going for it. I played the crap out of it for many years, but I need bigger necks. That particular Les Paul will always be with me.

Re: Classics Discontinued?

So, are there going to be any LPs with "plain top" in woodgrain?

The Classics were the only ones that I knew of without flamed maple - I played one at GC with a satin finish that was beautiful, and came home and found out they're discontinued...

Re: Classics Discontinued?

What else could they do - the Classic was a Standard anyway - Gibson just had way too many variations of the Standard. Just glad I have a nice heavy 2004 LP Classic and medium weight 2004 Standard.

It will be interesting in 10 years time to see if Gibson does a reissue of the Classic LP.

I wonder how long they will use the Traditional name tag. Why not just call the Traditional the Standard and the new 2008 Standard something else.

Now that the Classic is discontinued it will probably start getting some belated respect. I can see people saying, "why don't they bring back the Classic".

Re: Classics Discontinued?

Hi, I'm brand new to this forum. Last month I was given my first Gibson Les Paul for my birthday by my family. It is a wonderful gift. They gave me a wine red classic. I have to say this is a great guitar. The main reason I wanted this guitar was for the 60's slim tapper neck. It is much easier for me to play than th rounded 50's neck. Will there be another comparable model w/ the slim style neck? Those who have this guitar, how do you feel about the "hot" pups?

I personally thought it seemed odd that they had so many different models of the les paul, and at least they're cutting it down a bit.

Re: Classics Discontinued?

Seems that, little-by-little, Gibson has been taking all of the traditional features off of their regular production models (such as ABR-1, keystone Kluson copies, unchambered bodies) and reserving them for the Vintage Original Spec models.

A Classic hasn't had the specs of the original '89/'90 Classic for some time, which is a shame, because it was touted as a return to original specs. Gibson churns out model names as though their guitars were Pez dispensers.
