70's Les Paul Deluxe or Gibson Historic Les Paul

Which one would you choose? How do the quality compare?

I would go for the Norlin, but that's only sentimentality on my part, so ignore my opinion.

depends on the quality of each guitar. You may....may...have better luck with the quality of a CS guitar. Hell why not get one of each!

Re: 70's Les Paul Deluxe or Gibson Historic Les Paul

Is the deluxe all original or routed for HB's?

I was considering the same last month. I chose a 1970 Deluxe just because it had the hell played out of it. If an instrument is being played solid for 40+ years, there must be a reason why. Tone and playability. I bought this:

It would depend on the quality of the fretwork, then go from there.

You can change the pickups easy, you can sand down a neck, you can adjust nut height, you can do a lot of things to a guitar. After working at a repair shop I've found the 'good'ns' usually have good fretwork to top it all off. I can't say if it's that some trees were meant to have thin pieces of metal rammed into them or if the workers know when they have a 'good'n' on deck; I've just seen that fretwork is usually a guide to your next 'good'n'.

Two great options. Go with the one that feels best in your hands.

I am too biased to tell you what to go for.

I've had both, a fEw times. I finally settled on my R7. My 72 deluxe was great, as was my 62 sg, but historic just has it.

Are Norlins made like the Custom Shop? Hand made?

I have both a 71 Gold Top and VOS 57 Custom. The Custom is all hog with a 50's neck,so feels and sounds different to the Norlin.
I'd give the Custom the better build quality, but I prefer the played in feel of the Gold Top which makes it my No1.
It really comes down to personal preference,so you should play both.

Re: 70's Les Paul Deluxe or Gibson Historic Les Paul

I just made this choice myself. I went with the old one. The biggest factor for me was that I really only wanted a shell. I'm keeping an eye on the costs / hassles as I can count on myself to do this again. I pick it up tomorrow, and will know how much trouble I'm in.

Re: 70's Les Paul Deluxe or Gibson Historic Les Paul

I have a 76 Norlin that plays great, but my new traditional pro is the guitar I pick up first when I play now. The new ones are better on average than Norlins in my experience (I've owned three Norlins, two newer models), though you can get a really good or really bad example from either era.

I think you made a great choice. I can't wait to see some photos once you get her.

It's here. It's a mess. I'll put up a new thread to let you guys mock my decision.
