Maple Fretboards on Les Paul Customs

I don't get the problem with a Maple fretboard or for that matter a Maple neck on a Les Paul, as done by the Custom Shop. Why can't they experiment or make small runs of interesting guitars? The Class5's, the 68 reissues with Big Tops, the Killer Quilt Historics, the Flamed SG's, the Flamed Flying V's, the Summer Jams(with one piece tops) Les Paul Historics with one piece tops ( I believe 5 were made in 2007), stinger guitars, Les Paul Hot Rod, Spotlight(with Walnut stripe) Koa Les pauls, Korina Les Pauls. I could go on and on.
What's the big dea;? You like it , buy it. If not don't

I would love to have one of these with the neck pic below, a natural back & sides with a mahogany top, but I don't like the whole baked maple thing, it's like their trying to fake the look of rosewood

Re: Maple Fretboards on Les Paul Customs

Maple fretboards should have black inlays. I think Norlin were cutting costs by using white MOP inlays on both maple and rosewood boards just so they didn't have to make black ones.

There's far more benefits to baking maple than just preserving the classic dark fretboard Les Paul look. It's more resistant to warping and this way they don't need to lacquer the board (not a fan of finished boards). Of course, that horse carcass is pulp by now...

I really like the maple board on my Tele, looked at old Norlin Customs w/maple boards.
Pricey. Must be a reason.

+1, but they're not "experimenting or being creative", as this is nothing new to them.

Case in point: Frank's all-maple, '70s Custom (pictured above)...which looks pretty bad-ass, but definitely not my thing.

There is such a thing as black MOP, and why Gibson never thought of using it on maple boards is beyond me?

I like maple necks, but I'm not a fan of the maple fretboards (unless they have the unpainted maple top).

I can understand Gibson's choice to bake the maple fretboards to give them the classic LP look, and IMHO, I like Ebony boards, but I haven't seen a baked maple fretboard that would be dark enough to make me consider buying one.

I really liked the classic custom I played recently. Sounded great. Felt great. My next one will be a CC or a Trad, favoring the CC at this point.

Absolutely. When you're right, you're right. But not much of this is new, experimental or creative.

Most of Gibson's upper end stuff has maple (three-piece, usually) necks. Check out the top of the line L5S back in the 70s, virtually all of the archtop high end stuff (the ES-175 and ES-335 are considered middle or bottom of their respective packs and are mahogany), even the 25/50 Anniversary model had a maple neck. No maple fretboards, however. There WERE maple fretboards, necks AND bodies on several guitars back in the '70s, including the L6S and one of the models of the ES-335S.

Seems to me, however, that we should be just as free to slam Gibson for stuff we don't care for as we are to get all puddly over things we like. It's the 'Mellican Way.

Re: Maple Fretboards on Les Paul Customs

By the way...

Since the "richlite" fretboard is, indeed, plastic (reinforced with old rosewood import transfer paperwork), and since Gibson is obviously on a track to make whole guitars out of recycled game controllers and plastic garbage bags, will they continue to use nitrocellulose lacquer, claiming that it allows the plastic to "breathe?"

Will they use the word "traditional" to refer to the Original Guitar Hero game controllers and will these become Vintage and will there be Reissues and "Aged" versions? I'm assuming that the inevitable FireBird XX "Piano Roll" Voice-Over edition that will "Evolutionize" Guitar Playing As We Know It will retain the extremely popular Traditional Effects Switches from the FireBird X while incorporating hidden "Let The Guitar Do The Work" switching that will automatically play "Eruption" and "Stairway" using Robot Finger technology while you do your best air guitar routine. By then, Ace Frehley will be wheeled onstage in his cryogenic Head Preservation Unit (ala Ted Williams) to show that even dead guitarists can play gigs with the new innovations from Gibson.

Re: Maple Fretboards on Les Paul Customs

I'm always amazed by how much hate there is for Gibson LP's on the Gibson LP boards. I don't get it. If you don't like something, then don't buy it and it won't be an issue for you. Buy used. Pick out the ones you do like and then buy them. It isn't really rocket science. I dislike a lot of guitars, but instead of spending all my time pissing and moaning about them, I do things like, play the ones I like.

Next round of drinks is on me. You all get a tall glass of STFU.

Beautiful guitar! I'd still pull the fretboard & install an Ebony. For about $12 more they probably could have done so.

Many around here spend alot of cash and downtime scraping the "mud" outta their neck pup. These maple boards make an LP sing like butta from the neck!....I wouldn't give a crap if these were made out of catcrap and pink fuzzy stuff. They sound and play amazing. Ya want art...get a painting...ya want a "player" ...give me an LP with syrupeeee maple

....although, I will get an R9 one day cause "Jimmy" wants me to

The clear maple on the black custom is rather shocking. It looks better on the clear guitar. Would look even better if they would ditch the black headplate also.

While I do prefer Ebony fretboards I would love to add a Maple fretbroarded LPC to my collection. A 68 RI with Maple board will do just fine, or maybe a Norlin with Maple board.

They aren't...it is purely a cosmetic point.
Baking does make the maple more resilient, though.
And, unlike traditional maple boards, the baked maple can be oiled, which will darken it over time.

But I still like my ebony...
