My LP is noisy, please help me figure out why!
First off, sorry if this is the wrong forum.
So I have a Gibson LP Studio that I bought used. The pickups are not stock, they've been changed to Seymour Duncan Slash pickups. I've used the guitar with two different amps now (1 solid state, 1 tube) and their is a lot of static/buzzing/general noise coming from the amp. I've read that it could be a grounding issue, but if I touch the strings or a volume knob the noise does not stop (as people said it does if the pickups aren't grounded (?)- I might be wrong here though). Also, there's a sweet spot for me to stand (facing the amp, but turned at about 45 degrees) at which the noise is greatly minimized. I hope that's enough information! What's the deal? Thanks! |

I would just take it to the local guitar tech and have him/her run thru it and make sure all is as it should be with the wiring.

1. Did you try a different cable?
2. When you turned that "certain way," was the cable where you plug it into the guitar pulled on in any way (meaning it could be the cable itself or the input jack). 3. Did you try the entire rig in a different location? Could be dirty power out of the wall plug, or EM interference. Those would be the FIRST things I would look into, and you don't even have to remove an access plate... |

Re: My LP is noisy, please help me figure out why!
First, try another guitar in the exact same set up (I'd suggest guitar straight into amp - no effects). I'd also do it in a spot without other sources of radiation that may interfere (i.e. florescent light bulbs, hairdryers, electric shavers, nuclear reactors, spent fuel rods, etc.). If the same noise persists with the other guitar, the problem isn't the guitar.
If there isn't noise with the other guitar, move back to the LP. I'd guess that the problem would have to do with the replaced pups. See if any situations change or eliminate the noise: try twisting the plug in the jack (about a quarter turn) on both the guitar and the amp. Try the hand on the strings (again) and put a finger on a pole of each pup (separately and at the same time). If none of that changes the noise or doesn't eliminate it, I'd pop open the control cavity and closely inspect every solder joint to see if there is a stray strand of wire touching something it shouldn't (the ground is solid and therefore doesn't have strands). If you see something out of place, fix it and try again. Also look to see that the actual wiring closely resembles the appropriate diagram (they are all over MLP, if you have trouble finding them, PM me and I'll send you some) particularly the locations where the pup leads should be and the ground.
