Classic p-ups...yechhh!

I love my Classic, plays like a dream, drop dead gorgeous! Pick ups are drek...well...at least the bridge is. I'm thinking of switching it out for a Seymour Pearly Gates model any thoughts?

Also, when I play past the 12 fret, I can hear a strange rattle..not fretting out, it sounds like the vibration from the string is rattling some mystery piece of metal inside the guitar...I'm gonna open all cavities and search ,but so far the source eludes me. It almost sounds like a p-up height spring is rattling...

Oh , and Hello to the forum, I'm a new member!

Re: Classic p-ups...yechhh!

you see, the reason you both had these similar thoughts is because of the presence of Corey here at mlp... he is the cosmos... those thoughts are actually Corey. Corey is the cosmos.

by the way, get some pups without ceramic magnets... you actually could try sapping the magnets to tame the tone down maybe... what do you pup gurus think of this idea?

Some of the threads are getting stupid with the same jokes from old threads. I guess some people don't have anything else to do.

I vote for a good ol' set of 57's.

Re: Classic p-ups...yechhh!

just ordered a 57 classic and 57 classic plus in nickel. i really wanted zebras but they dont have them so oh well. i have to wait for the classics cuz they are out of stock but i figure byt he time i get back from where i gotta go they will be in. now i just need the rs guys to ship out a vintage preqired long shaft kit to me then i will be good. im wondeing if i should also get the pup selector switch from them too but im guessing that wont be much difference. i just really want a better tone. this one is way to sharp and loud.

Re: Classic p-ups...yechhh!

I've got the 500T/496R set in a custom, and set up right, they do just fine. I adjusted the polepieces on the bridge and lowered the neck. Can get some nice clean tones out of the neck and the bridge, well, its good for distorted tones.

I agree...they are good pickups. Most people can't be bothered or don't know how to dial them in...

thats a good point! a lot of folks don't take the time to dial in PUPs before getting frustrated with the tone they have... You can do a lot to tweak your sound by adjusting the height of the pups, as well as the height of the pole pieces.

My 496r/500ts are just fine! I love the things for metal.

They're WICKED pups, and if you don't know how to use them, they will bite you in the ass.

Re: Classic p-ups...yechhh!

I had a set of SD 57 in brigde, and a 57 custom in my neck. ( that was an odd looking pickup, the flange was on the bottom of the pickup, instead on the top like most.) Any way IMOP it sounded like crap on my tube amp. I adjusted for hours trying to get that freaking setup to sound good. O the Pickups came with my Classic.

I pulled that junk and put a set of Seymour Duncan alcino 2 pro in it. Yea baby, thats what im talking about. Man I'm telling you what, Put a set of 11 strings on that classic, and its a TONE Monster. This sucker has a bell sound to it, that I always dreamed of getting out of a guitar.

Rock On, and good luck with your pick of pickups.

I also agree the 500T & 496R are great pups. I took them out of
my Classic once, then put them back in and took the advice of
fellow forum member's and started adjusting the height. I do beleive
they are still a bit harsh, but I like metal-harsh, works for me.

I bothered, I tried, I sought advice, I played lotsa other Les Pauls.
Yep, it was the pickups.

Since I already had 57 Classics in my 335 I decided to put Burstbucker Pro's in it.
Almost there.....

It will get a 57/57 Plus set next and I figure I'm done.

Ceramics did not work for me at all. Maybe if I was playing Pantera....
