Re: Flame Top vs. Plain Top

I've got both, a standard with flames an a R8 plaintop ..... the R8 is iced tea, little grain, light, lots of sustain - the standard is more heavy, great looks, desert burst and thinner neck profile, and more bite .....

Re: Flame Top vs. Plain Top

to me it depends on what I'm playing, if it's 60's blues then I use the R8, with more high gain sounds I use the standard or my studio, but that's just for the tone, if you're wondering about the looks I prefer the flames ..... (can't afford a R9.....) but the sound of my R8 makes me play better, so I voted plaintop

Subtle flames.

Not really big on the outrageous tops.

My classic has very little flame in it, but I like em both. We need an option for that.

Re: Flame Top vs. Plain Top

Hmm I voted not thinking about colors besides bursts...Plain for plain, flame for burst. But not AAAA flames. They would make me stare at my guitar more than play it....

Re: Flame Top vs. Plain Top

Well, since I own a plaintop Les Paul, I really like the look of them! That's just something I already noticed a few times before in my life! You always like (or at least tell yourself to do) the thing(s) you own by your self! Anyhow I voted flame because that's what's typical Les Paul! My desicion would have been a lot more difficult if I'd own both - a flamed and a plaintop. My Plaintop:

Re: Flame Top vs. Plain Top

Generally I prefer a plain top with some nice grain showing thru but tone and playability is the first issue of concern to me. I played an R8 Worn Cherry w/ a plain top and nice grain pattern today that was very GAS inducing... Here I go again.
