I had an accident :(

Hey peeps. Today has been quite a jinxed day for us in this house. First off, the glass door on our new oven shattered, my brothers car broke down, my dads pc is acting up,

and... worst of all!...

My pride and joy, my Gibson Les Paul Menace, fell over whilst on it's stand and collided face first with the laminate flooring This resulted in a series of cracks, splits, and cursing (from me).

I instantly had to remove the strings as the tension was almost tearing the headstock completely off. Some pics are below, though the true extent of the cracks are pretty severe, right down to the truss rod

Is this fixable? Is the guitar now ruined? I'm taking her into the shop 2moro to see if anything can be done... i'm not expecting it to be cheap at all, though with this money is no object. I now wish i took that darn insurance cover that i'd seen advertised...

(not to mention my saving up for a BFG will have to be called off)

I may cry myself to sleep tonight

Sitting here cringing looking at those pix, looks a sore one I see you're in Glasgow, I hear the tech at GuitarGuitar is very good, his name is Billy. I hope you get it fixed, good luck.

Re: I had an accident :(

these things are so prone to neck and headstock breaks that most luthiers ive chatted with view this repair as second nature. she'll be better then new when repaired.

That's right, better than new because the repair is typically much stronger than the original. I'm no luthier but I've seen these type of repairs fixed in a few hours or less and don't recall any re break or otherwise be a problem.

My old 69 SG has a repair similar to yours but not as bad, it was professionally repaired 20-25+ years ago and it's plenty strong and at certain angles you can't even see the repair and that's on a stained body, if it's black you couldn't see it, feel it or tell any difference in tone or playability!
The repaired neck has fared better than the fretboard, it's got some wear grooves in the fretboard from 40 years of playing.

Re: I had an accident :(

It's fixable by a good luthier, a Menace probably ought to have a few cracks in it.

Re: I had an accident :(

Man I feel for you. What a day for sure.

I had a BFG fall onto a slate floor. Slide off a table it was just leaned against.

I was extremely fortunate though I surely did not feel that way at the time.

Since it wasn't strung at the time. The only damage was two top hat control knobs were broken. I just bought them though to replace the wooden ones used on the BFG's.

I can clearly see that having a strung guitar take a dive like your's or mine did that the damage to the headstock fracture greatly relies on the fact whether or not there is string tension on it.

I'd never thought about it till now though. If it were unstrung it probably wouldn't have broken like this. But, hell, what are the odds that it won't be strung when it falls?

I'm very sorry to see your baby hurting so badly. It is (as already mentioned above) very fixable.

Best of luck to you & your repair job. I'm sure a competent Luthier can do an excellent job of it too.

Re: I had an accident :(

The satin black finish will probably help mask the repair job. Good luck. I'd cry.

Re: I had an accident :(

You have my sympathies too man. I'd be ill for days if it happened to me. But like everyone said, fixable for sure. And I bet they can cover it pretty good with the black too, as opposed to a lighter translucent finish.

Don't worry though, BFG will be put off a couple of months, but the Menace can be saved.

Re: I had an accident :(

Damn...that sucks....don't worry though. My 1st Les Paul is a 1988 Standard, I bought in 94 with a repaired headstock. It was repaired and resprayed by a pro......it is the best playing Les Paul I have touched. Just find a luthier that is experianced and you should have no problems.

Damn! That's an incredible repair job right there! I'll bet it's even stronger than before it broke.

Wow! Now there's someone with some talent & skills.

Re: I had an accident :(

Some drunken jerk at a bar I was playing at stumbled up to the stage to request a song, and kicked my 96 Les Paul Special off the stand off the stage and onto the floor. Took the head stock clean off!

Took it to my guy on the edge off a breakdown and he said "wow I just ordered some TV yellow (my colour) for a project I'm working on!".

The repair is perfect, completely undetectable. He glued it and reshot the top of the neck and its like it never happened.

I know how you feel man, it was a sad day for me too. That guitar is my No.1. But it worked out. It will for you too.
