Gibson guitar truck stolen - be on the look out

Actually the truck has been recovered but the guitars are all gone. Here's the run down...

Quote:
...Earlier this week, while at a brick & mortar event in the Chicago area,
the Custom Shop truck and trailer were stolen from an area hotel parking
lot. Yes, the COMPLETE rig. The trailer & truck were recovered yesterday
morning by police, both heavily damaged, and guitars stolen. The
attached list has the list of missing guitars. If somebody does spot one of
these instruments, please have them contact Gibson at 1-800-4GIBSON,
or call the Naperville, Illinois police department at (630) 420-6666.

Thanks!

Re: Gibson guitar truck stolen - be on the look out

I kinda doubt any of these guitars are gonna turn up in local pawn shops, but crooks can be sooo dumb at times, I do hope they catch the thieves, Having had my first Les stolen, six months afrer I busted my arse all summer to get it, I have a big dislike for thieves.

They'll probably wind up in Canada.

They stole the whole truck? Sounds like an inside job to me.

Re: Gibson guitar truck stolen - be on the look out

FYI - The truck has been found (damaged) but the guitars are all gone. The truck will be refit and put back out on the road. Some think the guitars are headed overseas.

Imagine calling the boss with that bit of news.

"Hey, Henry, ya know that really VISIBLE trailer that OBVIOUSLY is loaded with EXPENSIVE guitars? Well, a funny thing happened..."

Somebody screwed up big, there.

I live not far from Naperville Music and have been there many times. They have been a dealer since the 70s. If I see anything turn up locally, I'll run the serial numbers...

I would think anyone with half a brain would ship those guitars out of the country otherwise they're very easy to track by serial number !! Also did you know there's a microchip in all custom shop guitars , I dont know if it can be used like a LoJack but it does identify the guitars as real Gibsons

Re: Gibson guitar truck stolen - be on the look out

What I noticed that was odd when I was there was the lack of supervision inside the truck. They had a big guy at the door (see photo) so you couldn't just walk out with one. However, it felt a little like being at Guitar Center (but with MUCH nicer guitars than most!). I played on a Johnny A, Historic Les Paul R0, 335, and an L5 and the guy working the truck didn't really say anything to me - I'd just walk up to one and take it down and sit down on a stool and try it out. In fact at one point, another "customer" like me turned and handed me his guitar - thinking I worked there I believe - guess the "famous guitars" shirt I was wearing may have been a contributing factor

Anyway, it seemed to me that the real workers spent more time watching those people playing the guitars outside of the truck, under at the "listening station" tents - and the thing is that these were the Gibson USA and Epiphone guitars. The Custom Shop stuff (in the truck) actually had LESS supervision by the workers

I seriously doubt they can lojack the chips ,If they could Gibson would be selling or telling potential customers about the chip, just Gibson's CYA on keeping Replica makers from copying one more aspect of a newer historic give it a few more years for tracking devices in your guitars .

Re: Gibson guitar truck stolen - be on the look out

Howdy Tardoggy,
Just to clarify. I am not ok with theft, I just love that line by Bowie. It sounds Gibson underestimated the depths to which people will go. I wonder if they will stop doing the Guitar Truck now. That is a drag, as it looks and sounds pretty cool. I 'd wager that the guitars are gone forever though.

No offense intended..

To be honest most likely Gibson would be auctioning off those guitars soon & restocking the truck anyway ( updating), Though some of those guitars were prototypes

Hopefully they wont, now Lo Jackin the truck and trailer would be a good idea, Hiring GOOD onsight Security also might help also , but neither is gonna stop a possible well planned inside job

Is there really a microchip in all customs? Or just those customs on the truck? If so where would they put it? Never heard that before.
