Re: How Do I Shave the Neck of my Standard Faded???

Use 0000 wire wool and a little bit of lemon oil.

Take your time and use your hand to do all the work.

Rub your hand along the neck following the grain and it'll all come off nicely.

Re: How Do I Shave the Neck of my Standard Faded???

My Classic is that way also...

Its goooey ...like stepping in some bubble gum in a parking lot.

Question is....whats is the neck gonna look like after it gets the steel

wool treatment ?

Just Curious...

Re: How Do I Shave the Neck of my Standard Faded???

I'd be interested to see if anybody has before and after pics of the steel wool treatment of a neck?

Re: How Do I Shave the Neck of my Standard Faded???

this was from when i sanded the neck with 400 then 800, you more or less get a soft dull finish. You will get similar results with the steel wool.

I eventually decided to take it all the way down, its was faster after dulling the finish... but after taking it all the way down and applying some tungs oil now its super fast!

Nice job Ryan!

Tung oil works great ... so does Tru-oil.

im thinking about giving mine a stinger... i believe its enough finish left there to do it ... yours looks awesome by the way! I dont think people realize just how much that finish will slow you down until you play a neck thats been stripped bear, rubbed in with tungs oil and polished with 0000 steel wool... its just no going back lol

Re: How Do I Shave the Neck of my Standard Faded???

I have to agree it is a very smooth ride and so it is hard to play anything else once you have become accustomed to it.

Well worth the effort and makes for a fantastic gigging guitar now. Sweat and Lacquer generally don't make for great feel!

We should start a Bareback Club!

Re: How Do I Shave the Neck of my Standard Faded???

I found on all mine that once I have polished them a few times that they are a lot less gummy. Maybe just breaks em in a little. Worth a try before you attack with scratchy stuff. Just my two cents.

Re: How Do I Shave the Neck of my Standard Faded???

I've done refins where I've left necks bare and masked off a "stinger", but how do you guys actually create the stinger on a guitar that's already finished?

So the wood is now raw and exposed to the elements or did it just

remove the glossy coat and some of the color ?

I would imagine tapping it off heavily might do the trick.. not to sure. I plan on adding a stinger to my neck, since i took off that areas paint when i shaved mine.. Just got to find some poly that will match and I hope it will take a minute to paint it. Just gotta find out what type of paint to use.. should i ask Roman about this?

No, you need tung oil. I use Frombys Tung Oil Finish its a low gloss "finish". Its not pure tung oil, rather a tung oil mixed with a varnish and feels great when you apply several light coats to your neck. I decided to use this version due to several reviews i read on several forums and do it your self sites.

You could use pure tung oil, but it literally takes days to dry and cure fully, especially here in the south. It also will feel more gummy.

Whatever route you decide to go, be sure to hit it with 0000 steel wool for a ultra smooth finish.

The lines on the stinger look too clean to have been sanded IMO.

travismbrown,
Apply light coats of tung oil and use the steel wool between coats.
Tru-oil works great too.
