Weird Screws on a 2007 Les Paul Studio

I'm not sure if there is a thread like this already, but here it goes. I bought an LP Studio with a natural wood finish last week used from a local guitar store. It came with the original pickguard and screws, uninstalled. I want to install the pickguard, but I don't have a screwdriver that fits the screws, and have no idea what they are or where to get a screwdriver for them. They're 5/8" long and 1/16" on one side with square holes. Help?

Re: Weird Screws on a 2007 Les Paul Studio

Every screw on every guitar I have is a Philips head (except of course those that ain't)...

Go to the Tool Crib at Home Depot and look for the ratchet driver bits (the thingies that go in a ratchet driver). Mine has about 40 different bits including stars, moons, squares, clovers (thanks lucky!) and what not (everything except torx).

If you don't have a ratchet driver, whilst you are at the Depot, might I suggest you pick one up?

No pink hearts?

Oh yeah, go get a square point screwdriver or get new screws from Stew-Mac.
Maybe the previous owner was worried about someone stealing his pick guard?

Re: Weird Screws on a 2007 Les Paul Studio

Thanks to both of you. I find this puzzling, because the guy at the guitar store said that they were the original pickguard screws.

Either way, i went to 3 different home depots till i found the right screwdrivers. As it turns out, they're called robertson screws, and are commonplace in Canada.

Gibson does not use robertson head screws. They use phillips head screws.

I wouldn't even use those screws. They are NOT original to the guitar. If, it is in fact a real Gibson. What is the year and serial# ?

Well, then I have an Dodge for you that was owned by a little old lady in Pasadena who only drove it on Sundays.

hmm, sounds like a previous owner just swapped it from original.

Re: Weird Screws on a 2007 Les Paul Studio

Just purchase the correct screws. Any guitar shop should have them. If not try ALLPARTS they have them.

That originally was a Ford screw, but is becoming more common now. You could probably go to Home Depot, Checker Auto or somewhere like that and pick up the socket that fits your particular size.

I don't know? As an aircraft machinist in my youth I had access to all sorts of things a "civilian" can't get. So the first thing I would do is strip my guitar and replace everything on it with weird aircraft parts. Made it one of a kind and good luck to anybody who stole it and tried to fix anything. Besides being easily identifiable.

Still looking for my "different" '72 also (finally got the pots moved and toggles added);
