Re: Bone Nut

i have a bone nut in my classic and its great... tons of folks swear by them... the only thing better is ivory, however thats outlawed now because of the elephants being slaughtered just for there tusks. i can live without the ivory because of that... i dont have any experience with brass nuts, ive heard SRV used one in one of his guitars for recording.

Oh a local luthier shop, had given me a ivory nut because they were out of others. It was fairly old and uncut, it was a replacement for my project because i had over cut the bone nut. Some parker guitar uses brass nuts and stainless steel frets on there guitars, but they compensate for it with a warmer humbuckers.

Not a big fan on the rolling nuts, but were you serious about them using mammoth tusk?

Re: Bone Nut

Bone nuts are great but Tusq, which is essentially artificial ivory, is pretty good, too. I use both - either is a vast improvement over plastic.

Re: Bone Nut

I prefer bone nuts, my Custom has a graphite in it, works good, but one of these days I'm going to get around to putting a bone nut in there.

Brass was a thing in the late 70's and 80's I think. I don't think I'd use one.

Re: Bone Nut

Brass has some good slippery properties. Would you think bone is better than the graphite impregnated type?

What are the nuts in an LP Standard made of? I have an '07, would it be plastic?

Re: Bone Nut

I use graphite nuts on most of my guitars. I put one of the earvana nuts on my 77 LP Custom a while back.

Re: Bone Nut

Personally I think bone is better tonally, but graphite works like a charm if you having any tuning problems at all.

Re: Bone Nut

I prefer bone nuts, I've got four guitars with bone nuts. My 75 Strat has a brass nut and a brass bridge. It's got a unique tone, different than normal Strats. A bit brighter, and acoustic sounding, a sweet jangly tone. I've got two LPs with stock nuts, a 2006 Studio PP and a 82 Custom. I might change the Studio to bone, I don't know though, it plays really great as is! My 82 I'm leaving stock. I bought it new in 82 and it's all stock.

One question for you guys. Does anyone know if 1982 Customs have plastic nuts, or some other material?

75 Strat

sorry, I don't have a good shot of the nut.

Re: Bone Nut

scozz, I've never tried a brass nut - only bone, tusq, and graphite. How's the tone compare? Was your brass nut stock? Based on my experience with brass saddles I'd expect it to warm up the tone a bit, but is that a fair assumption?

My '57 Strat still has the original bone nut:

I had the brass nut installed, the brass bridge was on it when I bought it in 1980, (not the stock bridge). The guy that did my setups back in thoes days, (an oldtimer in guitar circles), suggested the brass nut. He said it would compliment the the brass bridge already there, and give it a warm, full bell like tone. And he was right, especially with a tube amp. "Brass to brass" he would say.

Had a brass one in a Washburn of mine - no tuning problems at all. Have had a 'slip-stone' nut put in my new Standard. Looks like an ordinary nut but is self-lubricating - works very well...
