Re: Strap Locks

I don't like strap locks mainly because most have some mechanism for releasing. Buy a strap for each guitar and using a large metal washer, you can permanently affix the strap to the guitar.

Dude, sticky this post!

I just finished using this method for my R8. Very nice, clean look, and clean job. And, you're still using your Gibson screws

And no toothpicks and woodglue!

This is one method, but I don't think looks very clean or creates synthesis with your axes

Imagine a rack full of your guitars. Imagine all the guitars with the same gorgeous schaller strap buttons. It's a glorified look man!

Plus you only need one strap - your favorite strap.

Schallers are absolutely amazing. I have about 5 extra sets. Expensive, but very much well worth the price. Once you get a strap on 'em, there is no way in hell your guitar is coming off. You can swing your guitar around with absolutely no worries. It's an amazingly secure feeling.

That's the principle behind the DiMarzio system, really. They just want you to buy into a bunch of too-skinny, cheap looking/feeling straps - but you don't have to.

It's also the principle behind, well, you know.

I'm happy with a 2.5" strap with a decent pad (all black...all black). You'd be surprised how hard it can be to find such an animal. If the strap is comfy, I like it so one for each guitar is fine with me.

I'm a Grolsch washer fan and if I want to go the 'belt and suspenders' way, I'll toss on a Rotor Clip retainer ring (a c-shaped, washer-like thingy) on top of the Grolsch. I could probably pull my car down the driveway with that set up. I'll put up a couple pics of what I am talking about...tomorrow. I need to go harvest more washers for the pict-o-gram.

If I really want, I can find both the 'Grolsch' washers and the retainer clips in black and against the black strap, they are invisible (for all intent and purpose).

Re: Strap Locks

You don't have to spend $100 bucks for a good strap, my buddy bought 2 average stlye straps from GC and paid like $130 bucks.

I bought this one off ebay for $13.95, less than $20 bucks shipped, looks great, feels great, leather backing, it has become my favorite strap.

Re: Strap Locks

here are some pics of the Grolsch + retainer clip installation.

1. Acquire a matching set of washers
2. Drain the contents of the bottle into an appropriate receptacle
3. Safely dispose of bottle contents (might want to do so while enjoying a multimedia, educational program
4. Locate Grolsch washer and a retainer clip (3/8th" I think)
5. Put strap on guitar
6. Put Grolsch washer on
7. Put retainer clip on top (i.e. further away from body) of washer (photo 5)
8. Repeat steps 2-7 for second strap button
9. Repeat steps 1-8 for each of you guitars

Re: Strap Locks

I use dunlops on my SG and Schallers on my LPs and Explorer.

I had my Schallers on my old LP Goddess and they actually slipped out of place (was using a Buckethead stretch strap and doing some wicked moves in band practice) and the guitar almost fell. Good thing I have quick hands! But thats why I bought the dunlops.

I havent had a problem since though, so I mostly use schallers.

If it has a release mechanism, it is designed to release at some point...

I, too, plan to buy strap locks soon. I've had my LP for about 14 years, so it's about time. I always seem to grab it in time, but who knows... the next time? Anyway, I'll get to them soon. Wait, Gilligan's Island's on...

Re: Strap Locks

all ya gotta do is plug them in, give them a tug in the opposite direction to make sure they locked and your good to go. thats probably what happens to those who experience issues, they dont push them in all the way and it pops off and send ol paul to the floor. i love my babies too much for that.

Re: Strap Locks

Been using Dunlop for years, never an issue. I've seen them wear out but that takes a long, long time. If they start getting squirelly - replace 'em. I've got Schaller on my new LP just because I had a spare set lying around. I like them too but prefer the quickness of Dunlop.

Re: Strap Locks

Regarding the Grolsh rings, I think I'll give then a shot. I've heard that the beers with the right rings are harder to come by recently, so I ordered these from here: The Cellar Homebrew :: Brewing :: Bottling Supplies :: Beer Bottles :: Flip-Top Bottle (Grolsch-style) Rubber Replacement Seals, 25 each

Two problems:

Can someone school me on installation with a Historic. Do the rings just stretch over the strap button on top of the strap, or do you have to detach and re-attach the button to get them in place?

Apparently, I'm getting 25 washers. That leaves 24 extra, lonely washers. I think it's a sign.

Yepp, even on their flying Vs they do this. which is a pain in the A** if youre trying to install a dimarzio clip lok strap at a gig 30 mins before it starts and all you have is a screw driver.....

(conviniently, the larger strap button screw is like twice the size of the washer in the dimarzio strap, and theres no waay to accomadate for this except by using different washers )

Re: Strap Locks

i used Schallers with the stock Gibson screws. the screws that came with the Schallers wouldnt work

the one near the neck needed no mods

for the one near the tail, i had to grind down the screw head a tiny, tiny bit and drill out the button hole a tiny, tiny bit.

it turned out perfect

Time to expand the guitar collection!

No need to remove anything; just put the strap on the button as you would normally do, then stretch the washer over the button and make sure it's seated all the way around. Done.
