pickups- covered vs uncovered

If a guy was to take the exact same pickup and play it same guitar, same amp ,settings etc, would there be a difference in the tone from covered to uncovered and if so what would it be?

Yes, It would sound more hot, more of a raw tone. Even though, its a lot of work to take the covers off as theyre wax-potted to remove microphonic feedback (?) and youve got to remove the wax.
