Fitting Firebird mini hum on Les Paul Standard?

I want to try out a firebird style pick up on the bridge of my Les Paul Standard, in place of the full size Hum currently there. Is this possible? What mounting pieces would I need?

If it's not possible what would the closest alternative to a firebird pup be?

It's called a Les Paul Deluxe.

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. I don't think there's any way to do that. The Deluxe already has mini hums..

Yes, but I don't think they actually sell those in a kit or anything. Not to mention how bad it would look, IMO. A nice used Deluxe wouldn't be very expensive..

I want a firebird pickup, it's different to a normal mini hum. Looks like I may have to upgrade to a deluxe in order to do it.

Okay back on topic .
Do you have the original F/bird mounting rings ? If so it appears they will mount right up . The bird rings are a bit wider top to bottom and narrower front to back . And appear that they will cover the cavity .

Re: Fitting Firebird mini hum on Les Paul Standard?

I looked into putting a mini humbucker into one of my Epi Les Pauls to get a Neil Young sound. I talked to a guy (don't remember the name) at Willies American Guitars in St. Paul MN. Between us we thought maybe with a custom mount (maybe brass or plastic) it could work. Otherwise I know there's minis that are made to go in place of full size humbuckers. Look at GFS website.

Re: Fitting Firebird mini hum on Les Paul Standard?

You got it, I want the Neil Young sound but out of my Standard! That is a p90 on the neck (for which I can use a gibson p94) and a firebird on the bridge. So You reckon If I got F/bird mounting rings they would fit on the Standard OK?

Re: Fitting Firebird mini hum on Les Paul Standard?

The bird rings are flat and need to be contoured to meet the radius of the arch on the Paul . I'm thinking they will probably work ...
Roman or Greg may be of more assistance ...

Re: Fitting Firebird mini hum on Les Paul Standard?

The Firebird pup rings screw onto the top of the body w/ 4 screws. The pup is attached to the pup ring w/ 2 screws used for height adjustment. The Firebird body is flat.
The LP Deluxe has a contured top as mentioned earlier. The mini's in the LP are mounted using a hollow plastic housing. The LP uses only 2 screws which screw into 2 threaded inserts in the bottom of the pup cavities. These 2 screws hold the pup housing and the pup itself to the guitar and act as height adjustments for the pups.
I hve no idea as to the dimensional differences between an Firebird mini and a LP type mini.
I just assumed the dimensions were the same.
Sounds like a lot of work and mods in order to install any mini in an LP standard.
I agree it probably wouldn't look too good either.
Good luck!

It ain't hard, this took me 15 minutes to bang together. I'm guessing a nicer one might take an hour.
