I probably don't want to know this but....

Years ago I was burgaled and my collection of 15 guitars were stolen. My pride and joy was a 1973 Les Paul sunburst custom. Back then, I paid about £700 (1990). How much would it be worth today do you think?

Well, I just put £700 into an inflation calculator and it came up as being £6797 in 1973

Not sure if that's 100% accurate though ...

I was going by UK prices in what I think the UK market would be, but yeah, it all depends and it could be more than 2K if it was a particularly nice one in pretty good nic.

Re: I probably don't want to know this but....

I know it's not any consolation but the guy who stole it probably pawned it for a quick buck, and hopefully it wound up with someone who appreciates it.

There was a guy on another forum I visit who had his house burglarized and a number of guitars were stolen about 3 years ago. One of his guitars just showed up on eBay yesterday, with the pickguard and controls missing and the wiring harness hanging out of the cavity.

That's the kind of sh*t that would near make me cry if someone stole my Strat or my Paul!

Re: I probably don't want to know this but....

by law, the person who owns it - even if it is bought legally - doesn't own it. it's still yours BUT you have to prove it.

there are loads of stories of this kind of thing happening, especially with cars, and its why you have to be careful buying second hand gear. the difference with a car and a guitar is that cars are registered in a central database with the owners details so ownership can be traced. guitars arent.

its tough luck on someone who buys something in good faith and then has it taken off them - but its tough luck on the guy who had it stolen too if he doesnt get his belongings returned. the theory is, the person who bought it in good faith then has to take action against the person he bought it off, because they were selling stolen property - but it just deosnt happen in the real world.

sadly things like guitars (and bicycles are another good example) get stolen and then stay stolen.

Re: I probably don't want to know this but....

It was similar to one of Gary Moore's 59's that the guy from Montrose claimed was stolen from him in the 70's. GM had bought it legit and there was a legal battle going on at the time of his death.
The chances of me running into mine again are extreme but it would be nice to have it back.
