set up question....

Basic Guitar Setup Tips

i was setting up my studio because the guitar just really hasn't felt like the other's feel when i get them back from the luthier. So i decided to try to set it up by myself using the site above. now the bridge is set higher than it was and the neck has been loosened to the point of finger tight and i still have a freaking buzz sound from the middle to the high frets... any ideas?

Re: set up question....

Too much relief. That's the problem with the adjust the height and then add relief method to eliminate buzzing. You may be too low in height to begin with and adding more and more relief won't get you to the buzz free zone. Too much relief and you're playing in a valley in the middle of the neck and getting buzzing up the neck from there.

Setup can be less than stright forward. A too high nut throws off the overall assessment of how high/low the strings are.
The Bridge Radius should match the strings as closely as possible, When the bridge radius is larger than the fingerboard the two middle strings often buzz first as they're closer to the frets.
I always start with my neck as straight as possible, then (having tweeked the nut when I first got the guitar I don't need to consider it again) I adjust the string height to my preference which is 4/64th Low E and 3/64 - 4/64th high E. I may have to add a tiny bit of relief but I don't do it unless I really have to. A straight neck feels better and intonates better overall.

Re: set up question....

Throw away the measuring stuff.

Uncle Greg's quick setup:

1 Raise the action up TOO HIGH
2 Lower until the guitar plays well from the 12th fret up
3 Loosen or tighten the rod until it plays well down low. If the guitar frets out at the 2nd fret or so, loosen....If it's hard to play at the 2nd fret, tighten.
4 NOW set your intonation.

Done. At this point, it's prudent to check and correct nut slot heights, saddle heights, string radius and the like. But the basic theme is that you make the guitar play well where there is the least amount of adjustment available, then adjust the other areas to compensate.

Measuring is a waste of time. The guitar tells you what is comfortable.

When you've got the experience you have Greg I'd agree measurements are not the answer but the OP isn't able to do this by feel or he'd have managed it already.
All my LPs play the same and I've always started with a measurement and went from there. Because of my preference for blues bends & vibrato I don't like low, low action. I also don't like the feel of a neck with anything more than minimal relief, feels too spongy to me.
