Where's the Billy G. Signature Model????
ok, I know this has been covered......but I just received the book "Rock & Roll Gearhead" by Billy Gibbons...so far it's a phenominal read....great stories about the early touring days with Hendrix and Janis Joplin, etc.... Great pictures of an incredible collection of guitars and some really nice hot rods....a very cool book.
Billy specifically states in the book that Pearly Gates was the "magic ingredient" to ZZ top's sound. As far as I am concerned, Billy G. is a rock and roll legend AND a guitar god; one of the top 5 Les Paul players ever for sure. So where's the LP Billy Gibbons model?

Re: Where's the Billy G. Signature Model????
I thought there was some talk of a Rev. Willy G version with only one pick up. The neck pup would be a dummy!!???
How can you do Blue Jean Blues without a neck pick up? Death to the infidels! Splat

Re: Where's the Billy G. Signature Model????
Well there is the BFG - from Wikipedia:
Billy Gibbons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia William Frederick (Billy) Gibbons (born December 16, 1949), nicknamed the Reverend Willie G, is best known as the guitarist for ZZ Top. He is also the lead vocalist and composer for many of the band's classic songs. A Houston native, Gibbons is known for playing a classic 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar he calls Miss Pearly Gates. He is known to play his guitar using a quarter or a peso as a pick, lending a distinctive sound to his playing.

If John Sykes can have a LP sig, then Billy Gibbons should have one. Maybe he's under contract with Gretsch?

Re: Where's the Billy G. Signature Model????
There may be a few surprises in the coming years, who knows?
Hopefully they'll follow the Slash model, and make a nice guitar that can be had by players. BB

My first concert was ZZ and they were playing Explorers. That's what I always think of. But that was their "Afterburner" era, the cool stuff was with Miss Pearly Gates.

That would be an awesome guitar. It's possible that they could be working on one. Who knows though.

Re: Where's the Billy G. Signature Model????
will never happen, the fact that they would do a slash sig. and snub a lot of more suitable musicians like Billy Gibbons with a more extensive history tell the story...
The Slash sig. Lester is one fine instrument and i would certainly buy one if cash wasn't an issue with me right now, but I'm just saying that to them @ gibson a Slash is a more popular face nowadays (with the guitar hero crap), so more money to be made. - |

Re: Where's the Billy G. Signature Model????
I would imagine that both the Rev and Gibson need to come to an agreement and it's possible they haven't come to terms yet. It takes both parties to do the sigs.

Re: Where's the Billy G. Signature Model????
My hunch... either his price was too high, or he just didn't want to put in the amount of time Gibson would want from him to promote the guitar.
As much as us middle-aged folks like the Rev, Slash is definitely the standard bearer for the Les Paul to the under-40 masses. |
