Hi Guys,
I'm new here. This is my first post. I just picked up a Melody Maker as a cheap alternative to putting any of the guitars that I really care about on a truck to Florida in a few weeks for a company trip that I will be playing at. I wasn't expecting much from this little guitar but as soon as I started playing it I really fell in-love with the thing!!! So I was thinking about putting a different pickup in it. I would really like a P90 but don't know if I can handle routing the body and cutting the pickguard without messing something up and I don't feel like paying for the work right now. I was wondering if you guys could recommend a good replacement pickup. I noticed that Seymour Duncan has a MM pickup available. Has anybody out there had any experience with this one? I also found this one: BG Pups Hand Wound Custom Guitar Pickups by Bryan Gunsher Any advice would be very much appreciated. Joey |

Re: New Melody Maker - Pickup Questions
Joe
Im currently thinking to sell my dual pickup Les Paul Special to buy a new dual pickup (reissue) Melody Maker. Ive played it in music shops and I do like it. Its not as noisy as my P90s... But Im unsure because it seems like Im going backward. In any case, I like my P90s, but the MM has a lot less noise/sig. You might wanna think about that. Another mod to consider is using some of those tiny humbuckers they make (size of strat single coils). Let me know what you decide... and how it works out for you. |

Re: New Melody Maker - Pickup Questions
I used to have the New MM in the single pickup config. some people asked me if it was a toy guitar LOL. I liked the guitar quite a bit except I hated the frets...too tall and wide.
The pickup I thought sounded ok, it is supposed to be based on a P90 tone but I kind of found it to be a harsh dirty sounding single coil. I was going to throw a Tele bridge pickup in mine to tell you the truth, or I had thought about having Fralin rewind it for me. I have never been much on the single coil sized humbuckers... thats just me. I wonder how a hot strat bridge pickup would sound in there......
