Re: Best Strings for an LP

Elixir Nanoweb coated strings are great. The coating stops them from rusting over time. They last longer and sound bell-like and new for ages. Not the cheapest, but worth every penny for their longevity. I go for a 10 or 11 top depending how much acoustic playing I've been doing inbetween playing a Les Paul.

D'addarios nickle wound 10s I swear by 'em ! They are a great price for good strings that sound balanced and you can afford to change them a lot.

Re: Best Strings for an LP

I can't believe no one has said BOOMERS yet.... I tried them when I found out thats what Zack W. uses. At the time I was more into his stuff than I am now, but I love the sound and they have great harmonics.

All those new mumbo jumbo strings with the treatments and coating sound like crap IMHO - they sacrifice tone for not have to change your strings so much. I will admit BOOMERS don't last all that long, but they aren't expensive and I don't mind changing strings.

I've used GHS and like them. For something differnt the Maxima golds are really nice just expensive.

Re: Best Strings for an LP

Before I got my LP I used to play my strat with EB Power Slinky 11's tuned down a half step. After about 3 years of that and an onset of painful arthritis in my ring and middle fingers on my left hand I have switched to EB Super Slinky 9's on all my guitars. Gettin' old sucks.

I do like the Ernie Ball nickel wounds. Nickle holds up fine in my neck of the woods.

Re: Best Strings for an LP

I like the Ernie Ball RPS 10's, but recently tried those new GHS signature Santana's (Big Core) and I really like the 10.5s on a couple of my guitars. However, the LP is wearing the EBs.

Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys so far. Only .009 at the top though, so apparently I'm being a bit wimpy, will try some 10s after I've used up the other 2 sets of Hybrids!

Hey LoKi, does the wrap around add any difference to the tone or sustain?

Re: Best Strings for an LP

I have been using Dunlop Nickel Wound 10-46 strings lately (I decided to give em a whirl after my local store was out of Ernie Balls). I find the Dunlops to be just fine - think I might actually stay with the brand.

Re: Best Strings for an LP

Hmm, yeees - not sure it's worth playing any Les Paul with a 9 top. IMHO.
I have to concur with boogie1 on that one!

I like Elixir Nanoweb, Gibson vintage reissues, D'Addarios, Ernie Ball Slinky's - (11 top) I'm happy to go with whatever the good deals are on at the time in my local guit shops.

Glad to see some other Blue Steel users around here... I was beginning to think I'm the only one. I use 'em on all of my electrics (Gibson, Fender, Hamer, etc.).

I use these on my Taylor T5...

Re: Best Strings for an LP

Hello, all. New here. Great forum!!

I have '78 LP Custom and I like the Vintage reissue 11-50 in nickle, so far, but I'm thinking of going on up to EB Not Even Slinky 12-54 pretty soon...I've gotten to where I can bend the .011s as far as I want, so it's time to challenge myself again.
On the Strat I use 10-50's...usually DR, but I play the LP MUCH more.(duh) Once again, I'm going to move on up a guage to 11-50 on the Strat and get the resistance back in line. I LOVE a guitar that fights back a bit.

When it comes time to change strings thats what I am going to try. A friend of mine is a tech and he really likes them. Plus GHS is made in Michigan and thats where I am from.
