Re: Whats Your Favorite Year For The Gibson Les Paul

(OP) Late in 1980, or late 1980's? And just curious, but why those years in particular?

I suppose that I, like most, would pick 58-59-or-60, theoretically.

The nicest Gibson that I've played is my '69.

1968 - 1972. I'll be happy with any BB from that era. I've owned a '68 a '70' and '72. All Black Beauties. The '68 was the best, so I would say that is my favorite year for Les Pauls. Besides, that is their first year out of retirement and they have not gone away since

'88.

I was a kid with a gigging bar band. It was the first year I was able to buy a new LP and they were so damn fine.

No snobbery, no reissue, no pretense, no R0,R4 or R9, and, as far as I know, it was mostly people that actually played the guitar that were laying out the $700.00 or so to buy a Gibson at the time.

well said. I played a 95 studio the first time i played a gibby. it was a friend's and it sounded really good. I've played my other friend's classic but Idon't know what year it is and he could use a lesson or two on tone settings via the axe and the amp ( he likes it muddy, i like the crisp but thick crunch)
I owned an 05' epi LP goth, it was damn comfy but i wanted more bright capabilities so now I have the 08' Gibby LP Studio so with my little experience, I'd say that 95 was sweet but I'm in love with my new kid. raisin her to be a champ and when i throw those BB pros in her........Duck!

Anybody have commentary on 78 LP's. that's my birth year (kickass super historical year for music) and somewhere down the line I would like to own one. Professor Boleskinehouse, any data?

All of them. I've found good one's from all eras. Unfortunately, I've never gotten the chance to play a '50s burst.

yeah, of course not the same pickups and craftsmanship but I was set on it to the point that i have a yellow luxury padded strap on my wine red guitar because i ordered it to match the binding on the epi. it's really comfy so i just kept it instead of returning.

It's WOLF CHILD not DUMB CHILD.

lol i hear that and agree but from me to you, I love the way my guitar sounds and wouldn't change a thing. (haven't even got my luthier setup yet)
the way it sounds unplugged is such a treat for sittin on the couch with the lady watchin some movie that I'm pretending to be into. "I'm just practicin' my fingering and scales Babe." "I'm not even playing it, just moving my fingers."
when in reality, i'm pluckin' and feelin that tone come through my soul..... Shhhh Don't Tell

Re: Whats Your Favorite Year For The Gibson Les Paul

welp heres goes for me...no flaming please its just my 2 cents

I dont know about the 50 and 60's b/c i never was fortunate enuf to play one

I dont like the 70's only b/c of their weight and chunkyness with the necks.

I like 80s b/c thats what im used to

i dont like 90s b/c of Gibbys quality control issues.

I like the 00's and later and esp the newer chambered ones except for the price though

Late 70's Kalamazoo's are my favourite. Multiple piece maple necks with volute, stronger than an ox's back... Solid body again *late '77 and up*, large headstock, and serious craftsmanship with old wood.

I have a '79 and it is perfect in everyway, if you don't mind the weight and the 3 piece top. 3 piece tops went on until around '88-'89.

Ive never been fortunate enough to play a vintage Gibson, so I am going to have to say the 2000's are my favorites because I own to. I have played a 1959 Reissue and if the real thing plays better then its got to be heaven.

I have to agree... the one 'old' Les Paul I ever did play, a 1971 les paul deluxe goldtop, was the greatest guitar I ever held in my hands !

Maybe one day I'll buy a Black Beauty.
